Flimsy Bar ends (Glee)
« on: March 14, 2017, 21:54:43 »
I started fitting Heated Grips to my Glee tonight and I am finding that after fitting the Bar end it is a poor fitting. If I give it a wiggle (ooer) the whole assembly comes out.

Am I doing something daft?

Are the grip ends level with the end of the bars ?.
Do the bar ends tighten up OK or has the nut fallen off the ends ?

All level, the nut is attached, however, a good wiggle and the assemply pulls out (nut and all).

Do you have hand guards? If so are they Suzuki's plastic ones? Are the pieces in the correct order so you can see the rubber collar expand if you tighten the screw outside of the bars.

Try a good quality, perfectly fitting screwdriver bit in with a socket set ratchet. Should get them a bit tighter than a normal screwdriver . Watch out, they are soft headed screws. If you look at other glees - mine included - you'll see that many have the left hand bar end skewiff with handguard fitted. Odd.

I would remove the bar ends, spacers and rubber expansion collar and ensure all are clean and free from oil grease water etc. Also check the inside of the H/Bar.
Check the handguard spacer is the correct way around.
Now assemble  the bar end unit on the desk and screw up checking the rubber collar expands as it is compressed. If no fault is evident then refit and try again.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

The Glee uses a very short bar connection when adding hand guards. The guards assist in keeping the weight in place. Sometimes the installer doesn't follow the instructions properly as they differ from older models. Make sure there is a washer on each side of the rubber expander.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of how the various bits (including plastic handguards) should be aligned ? I ask because I the left-hand one on my Glee appeared to be wrongly assembled and I spent a while last night putting it back together as I thought it should have been. Seeing this thread makes me wonder ???
Thanks

That is the stock configuration without hand guards. It is different with them as some pieces are deleted.

Thanks, DLSte and Greywolf. I have the handguards, and the various bits of bar-end aren't quite as shown: in particular, one part, probably the equivalent of 4, is stepped, and the end of the guard appears to fit onto the narrowed part, with the black weight outboard of it...... or at least that's how I assume it's meant to be   :)
( I did a few miles today, and it's all still intact so I suspect my guessed setup is OK)

My Left hand side one came loose last week had to remove the 10mm nut from the bottom and put one washer on top and one underneath all fine now. :thumb:

The handguard set on the Glee uses a shorter screw and pretty much connects the rubber expander directly to the new spacer that holds the end of the knuckle cover.

That shows the parts in the kit but it doesn't show the which original parts are not used and how they are arranged. The kit instructions are needed to show that.

The knuckle cover kit for the 2012 Suzuki V-Strom requires disuse of #4, #5 and #6.
#7 and #8 plus the weight, washer and cylindrical part the guard clips to are the only parts held together by the new shorter screw. Just don't assume anything and follow the instructions that come with the kit. http://mediacdn.shopatron.com/media/mfg/9529/spec_file/263565720.pdf

However, I can't believe the bar end weight assembly is designed to take a lot of pressure. I have had two Wees, a Vee, and a Glee and I have just checked Wee2 and found that just like the others the long bolt that holds it together is a little bit bent. Similarly I have always been able to unscrew them without a screwdriver just by turning the bar weights. I always give them a little tightening twist as I go along on longish journeys. Not so much a plan as habitual paranoia.

When I got knocked off last Christmas, one of the very few bits of the bike that broke was the bolt holding the right hand bar end weight (I have handguards fitted).  The rubber bit took some digging out after that.  Photo of it attached.
