What does the 'V' in V Strom stand for?
« on: March 13, 2017, 01:19:54 »
I always assumed that it referred to the V-twin config of the engine, but now there's a parallel twin 'V Strom'   :icon_exclaim: ...

https://bikes.Suzuki.co.uk/bikes/adventure/v-strom-250/?grade=3c8f2a85-32a6-47a1-8354-bb4a9e045eda&price=0&Colour=Pearl+Nebular+Black+(YAY)

Looks like a great little bike (for those in the market for a smaller capacity adventure/commuter machine  :) ), but should it really share the V Strom handle   !? Maybe 'P Strom' was considered inappropriate, given that the German word, 'strom', translates to 'stream' in English - Introducing the all-new Suzuki 'Pee Stream' :happydance: .

 :smirk: Maybe not.

When we (Missus & I) were looking at baby names, 'Strom' was listed for boys,  meaning 'lover of water' - I'd assumed that's why Suzuki had gone down the 'stick a beak on everything' design route, but then was confounded by the crappy non-waterproof electrics

Maybe 'V' was supposed to be 'W' but our continental cousins couldn't get the pronunciation right    :stirpot:

The name V-Strom combines V, referring to the bike's V engine configuration, with the German word Strom, meaning stream or current.

Yes Strom...current, torrent etc. I'm sure I read somewhere reason for Germanic name was Suzuki Germany was behind much of the original Vee design/concept etc, so makes more sense

Awful placement of the exhaust header for an adventure bike. First thing to hit the rocks.

Talking to a rider today who has just traded in his 250 inazuma for something bigger. He said it was a really nice bike and he would be happy to get another. The Adventure style is just about all it is. A style. Not many sit up type bikes out there unless you include cruisers.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

That was my assumption, too.

I suppose that Suzuki are just trying to brand their new DL250 as part of their 'adventure' bike range by using the V Strom name. Can't blame them really - without the graphics it does look rather similar to other 250cc commuter bikes, I suppose  .

Yes that's the one I hear. Launched to have a slice of the GS action as a German image fits well for most markets and they bought it in large numbers themselves. I always wonder if the Germans actualy say WStrom though? Have to ask the next one I meet.
New 250 is just the right size and weight for those setting out on their first adventure. Kawasaki have some capable small capacity Versys named bikes in other markets but no word of them here yet.
T (tea) for twin Strom might have worked but back for a Pee strom after a chilly ride. I promise that's my schoolboy humour out the way for this season.

Well, they hadthe V1, V2 and now the Vstrom :) They don't give up do they?

I was sitting down the other day with a beer and looking at the Vstrom with a pal. We decided, perfectly designed for the job!

They're more likely to say, 'Fow Strom', as the letter 'V' is pronounced 'fow' in German. 'W', oddly enough, is pronounced as 'vaay'  . I lived there for ten years and it always confused me  .

I promise that's my schoolboy humour out the way for this season.

Why? Schoolboy humour is better than none at all .
