Lockable tank bag
« on: February 28, 2017, 01:07:55 »
Hello blokes, does anyone know of a lockable tank bag for sale? I know pacsafe produced one but I can't seem to find any. If not lockable, what have you found that's secure enough to leave on when you pop in a shop etc? Thanks

Sometimes, being able to lock something is a bad idea. People are used to seeing hard luggage in the usual places so I would lock them. I would not lock any soft luggage. That's just asking for someone to cut it open. There are hard tank bags that lock to the fuel ring but they look so flimsy I'd worry about tank damage when somebody decides it wouldn't be hard to pry the thing off. After all, if somebody went to the trouble of getting and locking a hard tank bag, there must be something valuable in it.

Then again, I wouldn't lock the doors on a rag top convertible. I would just make sure not to leave anything valuable in it.

When I rode with a tank bag, I'd take it in with me when I left the bike.

I have the package tank bag and tailbag. Both decent size, completely slashprooof and very good quality.

I used them a lot and happy to leave unattended but in the last house move I somehow lost the section of the tank bag that attaches the bag to the tank  ###

I'm reluctant to throw it away aso it can still be used as a 2nd tailbag and I'm hoping I'll find the attachment one day

A top box! I'd use that for valuables that I couldn't take with me. I use a thin wire bike lock to secure my tank bag to the bike - the bag is worth far more than its contents! If some low life wants to open it and see what's inside, that's better than the whole bag walking. Best rule is not too leave anything on the bike that you can't afford to replace. In London, best not to leave the bike at all!

Fair points all, cheers. I'm new to riding and after living in Bristol for 10 years where I had my push bikes stolen repeatedly from the most secure places, I'm just a little conscious of that stuff now.
With that in mind, I take it there's no real need to splash out on a really good one. An Oxford one'll do the trick.

Just remember tank not magnetic a mate of mine bought an Oxford tankbag put it on and it promptly fell off. He was coming back to biking after a few years (30) and assumed tanks were still made from metal.

The tank is steel. The cowling and tank covers, if a model has them, are plastic.

If you decide to go for a Givi tanklock bag, I just happen to have a mint condition BF01 clamp for sale! See 'Farewell clearance' in 'for sale' section. (Too good an opportunity to pass by!)
