Help! I've broken my Wee
« on: February 25, 2017, 11:25:32 »
I was taking the bike out after a month or so. I felt the throttle was sticking a bit (not coming below 2000 rpm unless I manually close it fully), so I sprayed throttle body and the throttle thingy on the handle bar with WD 40. After doing this, the idle speed became 5000 rpm and had to really force it down to bring it down to idle. I cut short the ride and came back home.

I thought I would check the OBD for any error codes with the throttle body. So took the seat away and changed the jumper on these cables (image attached). After doing so, the fuel pump stopped running and I get the CHEC warning.

Please help me diagnose what the issue is and get the bike running! :angry-banghead:

I already checked the usual suspects such as kill switch, side stand switch and clutch switch.

Have you checked the fuses?

Yep, just checked the fuel pump fuse. Swapped it with the spare fuse. Still no joy.

Any idea what that connector with the red jumper wire is??

Cheers

Does the fuel pump work if you unplug the jumper wire and put it back to normal? If not, and not fuses I'd check the connectors for corrosion/loose wire

Thanks UK_VStrom650, I've tried all combinations for the jumper. Still no luck.

I havent checked the ignition fuse yet. Will give that a go else, will try cleaning the kill switch.

That doesn't look like you have put the jumper in the right plug to me.

Update: Managed to start the bike. It seems that the ignition fuse was blown, thanks to you Fatrat.

don't know if there are any hidden electrical issues to cause the fuse to blow..

Still havent figured out how to fix the throttle sticking and idling issue.. Any thoughts on this chaps?

Ta.

My guess is that's the wrong plug to change the jumpers on and you caused a short circuit blowing the fuse.

If it's has a linkage on the throttle bodies spray that with loads of WD40.

Here's how to find the connector to jumper. You may need to use a computer. The site has not been working with phones for a while now.

http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

If you don't have an FI displayed, don't bother. You won't find an error code. Check the linkage to make sure the throttle cables aren't adjusted so the is no gap at A in this picture. You need a small gap there. Also make sure the idle speed is adjusted to be about 1300rpm. If those are okay, chances are your TPS is worn out.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Thanks for your help fellas. Bike will be going to a repair shop soon.
Will pass on your thoughts about the problem to the mechanic. Hopefully should be able to sort out the issue soon.

Cheers.

Thanks GW. No FI displayed. Mistook the one with the jumper for being the connector to access dealer mode. Couldn't find what it is on the wiring diagram. My head's about to explode  ###

Without any promises this is what I did.

The plug is square, white, and has a black rubber cover. You must remove the cover to get at the contacts you are looking for.
Remove the seat and stand on the right side of the bike.
The plug is tucked under the tank just forward of the rear tank fixing.
Gently pull the plug from under the tank From the side and not directly from under the rear fixing.
Now you must identify the contacts.
There are six holes but only four have wired connectors.
Connect the bridge wire to the connector on the top right ( on mine its white)  to the connector on the lower right (on mine it is black).

Looking at the connections from left to right:-
top row
1 is wired
2 is empty
3 is wired
Lower row
1 is empty
2 is wired
3 is wired

I connected the bridge to the no. 3 connections.

Then I turned on the ignition.

If the F1 light does not come on then you may not obtain a code.

Start the engine and check for the F1 light. It may take 10 to 15 seconds to come on.

LOOK HERE FOR SERVICE MANUAL FOR YOUR MODEL/YEAR.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

@ Brockett: Cheers. Figured that out later.

Bike's being looked at a garage now.

Will post on the diagnosis and solution.

Bike has been fixed now. Disassembly, a can of WD-40 and cleaning apparently did the trick.
Runs brilliantly now.

Thank you chaps for your help.
