High rev hesitation / holding back
« on: February 07, 2017, 19:56:08 »
It seems that when I use full throttle in the upper end of the rev range (7k up) my wee holds back a little. If I back off the throttle it seems OK.

I haven't revved it that hard previously so only just noticed.

Any ideas? TPS? Fuel filter blocked?

Runs fine on partial throttle, you would never notice any hesitation unless you're going full potato.

Are you hitting the rev limiter?

Search the site for high pressure filter.

Interesting. Just to add, bike been standing for 1 year or more. I suppose first step is fuel pump flow test, then if poor, remove pump and check if filter is buggered?

Pattern complete pumps for £20 on eBay.

In almost every instance, the cause of a low flow is a clogged high pressure filter. The most cost effective remedy is an external filter modification. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html

The typical under $100 replacements are really only motors and that is rarely the problem.

I gathered that I couldn't do a mod as mine is a later bike.

I also thought I needed a new teabag type filter - I only mentioned the £20 kit as this is included with it.

Garth,

The link I posted was also a bike that had been standing. It is also worth noting that changing the high pressure filter (£100) fixed the issue BUT the root cause was later identified as rust in the tank.

There are instructions later in the thread for K7 and later 650s. The teabag filter is just a strainer to keep out large particles. The high pressure filter is higher and in the same housing as the regulator, #7 in the diagram.

I'm a touch confused.

It appears you bought a complete housing for £100, but then changed the filter inside the old housing with an £8 pattern one?

Surely the plastic housing will be fine and it's just the filter I need to change?

I will change the strainer on the pump also while I'm in there.

Or is the HP filter thing, #7, one complete unit and unserviceable, and the £8 filter you mentioned, the strainer?

Aside from these issues I'm having, bike is nice to ride. Relaxing even.

The strainer will catch the large pieces of crud but it is the high pressure filter #7 that gets blocked and can't be cleaned.

I would recommend a fuel flow test.

I will do a flow test first.

Problem is getting worse. If I use full throttle from say 3,000rpm, it will pull clean to maybe 6,000 and then hesitate, hold back from then on.

Could someone please quote the relevant post for the mod on the 2007+ bikes? I can't open the page, all I get is an error.

VSRI had a database problem recently that seems to be fixed now. See http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html with the relevent section on 2007 and later 650s starting with post 231.

Garth,

From what I read, the mod to the 2007> is a bit hit and miss.
