Shad luggage
« on: January 31, 2017, 19:55:43 »
Hi everyone, I'm debating whether or not to buy Shad panniers and top box for my 2016 Vstrom 1000. I like the price and cannot really afford anything else. The kit is the 48L top box and 36L panniers priced at £577. The problem is the images I've seen of the panniers put me off as they stick out a fair bit. 107cm wide according to webikeworld. The top box isn't a worry as it won't get in the way. Does anyone have them or any other type of a similar size and if so what are your views on them.

I found a pair of Shad 36L panniers and the 3P mounting system second hand but only 4 months old and unused on ebay and fitted them today. The 3P rack was a doddle to fit and is fairly unobtrusive (although there is a screw missing which I need to source before its fully secure), the width measured across the bike when they are fitted is about 41-42 inch which is about 2 inches wider than the bar handguards so I'll need to be careful. I'm impressed with the quality though. I'll add some pictures when the bike comes out of hibernation.

I've had the same Shad set for 4 years now.
You're right about the width, with panniers mounted the sucker is as wide as Goldwing - but the space is amazing. Took the missus through Holland, Belgie, France, Switzerland, Italy (Garda/Venice/Dolomites) and over the Stelvio Pass for good measure - then back via Cherbourg. She had the panniers and all my stuff, plus lube/tools went in the cavernous topbox.
Fitting was straightforward and the pannier rails aren't obtrusive - so they stay on. You have to remove the indicators. Can't fault 'em and real happy. You can get two helmets into the 48l topbox - real useful if you have a mate on a sports bike, as he can dump his in there as well.
Only criticism is the mounting plate paint finish blistered and rusted (stessing I guess). Whipped it off, wire brush, primer, Hammerlite. Crap paint job - but its the underside & you can't see it.
Well happy otherwise and great price.
