Handguard Repair Advice
« on: January 29, 2017, 16:51:19 »
Evening All,

Got myself into a needless situation today on an icy/snowy lane and ended up dropping my bike at a standstill on it's right side. Thankfully the crash bars did an excellent job, the only damage being a smashed front indicator and cracked hand guard. Luckily some mountain bikers helped me to lift the bike and push me up the hill!!
Anyhow... The hand guard has sheared off where the top fixing point is, it looks like it would glue together nicely. Does anyone have a recommendation for a product that would bond this type of plastic?
The indicator is going to need replacing, hopefully they're not too dear.
Many thanks :)

.

For the money I would source a secondhand one on ebay or buy a new one, given that it will be weaker the next time you drop it and aesthetically won't look good glued that's if you can glue them.

It's only broken in one place so would really like to have a go at repairing it, I will have a look at second hand though, a new pair is £60!

I read somewhere (Ride magazine?) that to repair cracks in panels you can melt zip ties into the hole/joint as it's made from the same material (like welding the plastic). Not sure if it'll work on handguards & never tried that technique myself...

Great video.
You could also try some 'Pipeweld' glue - (not sure if that's its proper name) and if that doesn't work try the soldering technique.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the broken piece is a bit small to try the welding so will give a two part epoxy type thing a go. Will report back later this week...

Did the same thing to my Vstrom hand guard.  Tried plastic welding, too thin.  Tried one part plastic glue....worked for a week or so.   Then was recommended Locktite Plastics Bonding System.  It is a few ounces of liquid super glue in a tube and a primer solution in a felt tip applicator.  All for about three dollars.   It worked like a charm and has made a strong bond for over a year now.

I did the same thing to the hand guard. Used the fixing glue for kitchen light pelmet and fitting, two part glue , one normal glue container and then an aerosol to activate, very controllable and no mess, worked a treat and you can't see the join.

I did Pete, sorry for not posting. I found some of the loctite plastics glue as recommended and it's done a great job. I even managed to save the indicator housing, in the end all that was needed was a new bulb and replacement lens :)
