Opinions on this wee
« on: January 07, 2017, 23:21:44 »
I've just waved goodbye to my zx9r, which means I can officially go Strom shopping. I've spied this one on eBay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182412690180

And was wondering what people think of it. Obviously I'd have to budget in for a set of tyres and presumably a valve check as they've not been done since 20k.

What say you? Approx worth? I'm looking at the cheaper end of the scale. I'm poor.

Mechanically says its OK  :handgestures-fingerscrossed: - does mention that the kill switch isn't working which would be a slight worry for me (?possible other electrical faults or at risk of developing them?) also I sold my V-strom with 19,000 miles, much better condition cosmetically and more accessories etc and got 1400 for it (admittedly as part ex and think a reasonable private sale would have been 1500-1700). Its a little bit shabby and I think you would find better examples for your money.

If you're set on this particular one though I wouldn't pay more than 1550-1600 very top end for it.

The reserve is £1500. I'm trying to gauge what they go for. I wouldn't want to pay more than £1500 for that one, so glad others agree.

Maybe I should hold out. No desperate rush. Mileage anything to worry about?

I would keep looking, if there are faults not put right that are mentioned, there may be others that are not.
I would be looking for a bike where the owner has stayed on top of maintenance and any issues that pop up.

I would question if a motorcycle "DEALER" can  legally sell a bike that has  a  safety device  as important as the kill switch ..not working ..?

I'd guess it's being sold as "spares or repairs", that use to be the get out clause for dealers to unload a vehicle without offering any warranty.
When I bought my SD the dealer sold it as a "private sale" so no warranty, it'd still been through their workshop though as they'd need to vet the bike before accepting it as a trader in.

With this particular one however the dealer has shown no love, not even washed it properly, or at all.
I'd wait for the next one I think...

What's your max budget btw?

Got to agree with Wurzel & doboy.
The bike looks pretty good in the photo's but photo's are deceptive.
The issues that are mentioned aren't major one's for me but it just looks like no-one can be bothered... so what about the rest of the bike?
Is it that good?

Not for me, too expensive for the issues on it.

A defective kill switch hmmmmm.
1. It may be a strip and clean up job in which case the fact that it hasn't been done is IMHO indicative of a lack of care and I wouldn't want it.
2. It may be that the wiring is a problem but again that should be a fairly inexpensive fix and again is indicative of previous owner not being bothered or able to carry out minor repairs.
3. The switch assembly is beyond repair and it's going to be costly, for you, to fix it.

I would factor in all the servicing and remedial works that may be on the cards,
Tyres
Brakes: pads, and pistons and new seals
Chain and sprocket set
Sort out the water pump cover
Suspension bearings
Head race and wheel bearings
Air filter
Engine oil and filter
set of spark plugs.

Also check the bike model is a K7 and not a K6 registered in 2007.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I think it's a k6 by the decals?

Up to 2k at a push is my budget.

Looking a bit deeper (and taking into account the stated electrical problems), if I bought this one I'd be exposing every electrical connector (especially the ones behind the RAD) for some TLC.

It may just be that this bike has been used as an all year round commuter but when I see one in this neglected external state, I expect to see an Air Filter that hasn't (ever) been changed).

It does look and sound much better.

I suppose that's the difference of what c. a grand will get you between this one and the previous one.

2200. I think it's fair, considering new tyre, FSH and the Sat Nav is a bonus too.

I checked completed listings and it seems about right.
