Wiring help required - datatool alarm removal
« on: January 02, 2017, 17:30:43 »
Evening All,

After a flat battery a few weeks back I've decided to remove a datatool system 3 before fitting the new battery.

The unit is tucked up by the taillight and almost all the connections are into the taillight loom but I'm struggling to figure out what's what.

Reading the manual, it states that to remove the assembly only the main taillight connector needs to be removed, however on my bike 4 smaller connectors have to be removed. Looking at the pic below, am I right in thinking the black/grey plugs would normally be connected?

These connectors are on the end of a load of alarm wires, mainly spliced connections.

I'm also confused by the 5 black wires with yellow blobs coming out the end of the loom where the taillight connector is, are these wires normally there and where do they go, thinking they are ground? They have been wired into a connector block that seems to have all but one on one side of the block.

With all the connections close by I'm convinced I should be able to get this out fairly easily, always looks a lot worse than it is! Appreciate your thoughts anyway :)

The connector with multiple black wires is a diagnostic connector. It should be free of outside wiring. The grey wires are tail light live, the white/black wires are brake light live, the black/white wires are earth, the black wires are left turn signal live and the light green wires are right turn signal live. The connectors with wires of those colors need to be connected.

Thanks greywolf, I've been studying the wiring diagram and looking at online pics of the loom and those wires all seem to terminate into a block of 4 and a single wire, is that the diagnostic connector you're referring to. It's odd that 5 of the alarm wires seem to be wired into this. I think the installer may have done me a favour with the extra light connectors then, just this connector block to figure out. It's covered in a thick heat shrink and looks to have been covered in glue first :(

Some aftermarket devices use the diagnostic connector for various functions. It's not too bad as long as none of the wires are cut in the process. Then the device only needs to be unplugged.

I'd open up that heat shrink and unplug the connection.

I bow to the superior knowledge of Greywolf but I thought the plug with the 4 black wires in originally had a plug inserted which would have shorted two of the wires together as part of the security system. If this is the case one has to find out which two wires they are. If I am wrong sorry for poking my nose in.
Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

Live in Rothley, Leicestershire.

I managed to cut away the heat shrink/glue to find 4 alarm wires plugged into the 4 pin plug and a single wire plugged into the other plug. As the plugs are stock, I guess the only thing to do is simply unplug them :) It leaves me with two alarm wires which disappear into the loom close to the engine. If these are the immobilising wires, am I right in thinking they simply need to be soldered together? From what I've read these wires would be connected to two cut ends of the same wire from the loom. Some setups have more than one set of these but mine appears to only have one pair.

That is my take on it too. If the wires are all black, that's the diagnostic plug. The dealer mode plug has various colored wires. Dealer mode is achieved by shorting together the White/Red & Black/White wires.

Just wanted to rap up this post as I finally got the bike running again today with the alarm removed :) There was only one cut to repair in the loom, a  green/yellow wire, part of the starter circuit. Important point to note about the 'diagnostic plugs' found with the taillight connector. In stock configuration there must be a plug inserted which actually bridges two of the wires, these relate to the fuel pump relay. Initially I had simply taped up the plugs as they were after having removed the alarm. When I had fitted the new battery the pump did not prime and I was getting no power to the fuel pump relay. After a lot of head scratching we spotted the bridge on the wiring diagram. Off came the tape, used a multimeter to identify the correct two wires to bridge and finally the bike was priming on the ignition and the bike was alive :D Just wanted to post this in case someone else finds themselves in the same position, the bridge on the plug is very easily overlooked on the diagram as it almost appears to be part of the component drawing! My guess is that these plugs are probably purposely there for alarms/immobilisers as they provide power and a break point for the fuel pump circuit.

Spot on Ziggy, I can't believe I overlooked this, we finally spotted the bridge on the wiring diagram after a lot of cursing and no fuel pump running!!!

The diagnostic plug apparently hooks up to the diagnostic machine with the pump wires open for the machine to turn them on and off to do fuel pump volume tests. The cap closes the connection for normal use. I didn't read about that anywhere before.

Thanks grey wolf, I did think it was a bit strange simply having the plugs both dangling there, it makes sense that there usually would be a plug/cap normally inserted. I simply bridged with a piece of copper core from a length of socket cable and taped it all up. Interestingly, having tested all the pins on the plug, there is a constant live and a switched live off the plug so could potentially be used for accessories or at least a switched live feed for a relay if one so wished...

Can someone indicate which are the actual pins to bridge, maybe with an image ? I have the exact same problem on a vstrom DL1000 K8, it has a burnt datatool s4 c1 alarm.

I removed my data too as it went faulty.

Standard installation is to cut the fuel pump and starter relay circuits and connect them through the alarm. You will need to trace the cables to find where these circuits have been cut and reconnect the ends together after cutting the alarm wires off.
