Are 1000 forks same as 650
« on: December 06, 2016, 14:12:13 »
Hi!
I've just acquired a neglected 07 650 strom which I intend to get back on the road over the winter. The forks are very corroded and was wondering if 1000 forks will go straight in? The reason is the 650 forks are more expensive secondhand.
Anyone?

I enquired a while ago about using the cartridge internals from a 1k to upgrade the 650s damper rods.

The stanchions (chrome legs) are about an inch longer from what I can tell, tge 1k lowers are different, I think the spundle is thicker.
I suspect if you use the 1k legs you would need the 1k cartridge internals, I'm not sure wether they are a straight fit to the 650 lowers however.
GW suggested that the 1k spring rate & cartridge internals were not a significant upgrade over the 650 damper rod setup.

It might be easiest buying a couple of new chrome stanchions for the 650, new 'uns are just over £100 each as I recall

Cheers bud,
I need 2 at just over £100 each then have to pay someone to fit them. Would be cheaper just swap them out for a decent secondhand set. The thou and 6 look identical just wondering if anyone has done it or has the specs.
Not looking to upgrade just get it back in the road!

They are not swappable. The Wee has a smaller diameter axle and runs the speedometer sensor off the front wheel. The Vee has the speedo sensor on the front sprocket.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Jay, if you have space to work, why not do it yourself? There is a lot of information on how to, on this site. It is an easy job as long as the parts are bought before hand or that you have transport to collect the parts once you have determined what you want to replace. There are many of us that have done fork oil / fork seal replacement. Use the search function and manual for instructions. Best of luck. If you get stuck use the Forum.
