Rattle rattle rattle
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:05:39 »
I've noticed latly I'm getting a rattle from low acceleration. It sounds like its coming from the chain but I could be wrong. Can the chain rattle if it's too loose?

Knackered or badly adjusted chain is favourite. Ditto worn sprockets.

Sent using carrier pigeon...

If you suspect the drive chain is too slack also check the plastic swing arm protector for excessive wear.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

It is a bit loose but nothing too much. I've had worse in the past. I've done 14k on it now so would they be worn out at that sort of miles?

I examine the chain for wear to or missing, 'O' rings and the amount off side slack and the amount of adjustment already taken up.
I would check the sprockets and if either or both is worn replace the lot.
If the sprockets are OK I would run the chain until they need to be replaced.

Been to my local Suzuki dealer in lincoln and got them to have a look. The chain was about touching the floor so I don't think that was very good lol. But its been nipped up and is due a new chain and sprockets so its going to be a nice big bill next time I go there as its due a 15k service to.

Erm. If you've had worse in the past then I can only wonder at how bad they were. If you get the spanners out and keep it adjusted, not forgetting some chain lube every now and then, you could save a whole load of money  :fix:

I'm not taking the pee (well maybe a bit) but we all need to start somewhere and if vstromspoon needs some advice/help I will gladly give it. I'm only an hours ride away.

lol don't worry I deserve it nothing wrong with some pee taking. to be honest it really didn't look that bad to me. I do know how to adjust them but the garage does it for free so I can keep my hand clean  :lala:

And I don't lube it every week. I'm pritty sure 15k out of a chain isn't to bad anyway is it?

I would expect a lot more than 15k but it does also depend on how hard you accelerate. Lubing the chain regularly does make a difference. If you're happy with the expense then it doesn't matter.
I tend to wear my tyres quite quickly compared to other riders I know but having seen the way they ride I am more than happy to carry on enjoying myself and just buy more tyres.
