2005 Wee not starting.
« on: November 26, 2016, 08:38:00 »
Hello,

seems like the Scottish weather has killed my wee Wee :)

When trying to start it the other day I got two or three grunts from the starter and then just some clicking that sounds like a relay.

I thought it was the battery, it was pretty cold and the battery is 4 years old. So I took it out overnight and recharged it. Was at a nice 13,1V when I put it back in. But still nothing just the clicking sound.

Any ideas what might be wrong with the little fella? Thanks for your help in advance.

It could still be the battery as holding a voltage is not an indicator that it can push any current around.

Take the battery to someone who can test it, or just buy a new one.

As Martin says, the voltage is just an indication. If your battery is that age, and especially factoring where you live and the likely temperatures, I'd change it as a matter of course  :thumb:

I replaced the battery with a new one. Still no success. All I get is the clicking of the solenoid. Any ideas what else could be the problem?

Give the starter motor tap with something blunt or Rock the bike back and forth in gear then give it another go. Maybe something wrong with your starter motor internals

Had a similar problem on my old VFR, (starter right behind the front wheel!!!!!) the cable and connector post on the starter had rusted up! Struggled to turn over for 2/3 days then packed up altogether!

After checking a few more things mentioned here with no success I accepted that whatever it was it was beyond my limited skills so I had the bike moved to the mechanic.

His verdict, the starter motor is toast. He will replace the brushes which he thinks should fix the issue. If that fails its time for a new starter.

Question is does the starter from 1000 work as well and can I also use the one from SV650? Apparently a brand new one is like 300 pounds.

Would have thought the SV 650 starter would fit, virtually the same engine. As for the 1000 no .

Good news its running again.  :)

A new set of brushes did the job. They where so worn down that they had basically disappeared.
