New 2017 VStrom 250 launched
« on: November 11, 2016, 21:00:24 »
Guess what? A new VStrom but its not a V!!! Parallel twin 250 with the Inazuma engine I would guess.

"Suzuki recently showcased the new V-Strom 250 at the 2016 EICMA, The bike borrows most of its design cues from its elder V-Strom siblings. It uses the same cycle parts as on the Suzuki GSX-250R as well as the same motor. Suzuki has not altered the engine and hence, the power and torque figures of 25PS and 23.4Nm is similar to the sports commuter. The bike is an an entry level adventure bike that can be ridden on and off road"

I like the red one best but we could end up with others and no red in the UK.

And a black one with red decals.

Suzuki GB's own site. https://www.Suzuki-gb.co.uk/motorcycles/motorcycles/adventure-sports-touring/vstrom/v-strom-250/
No pricing yet. £ TBA. Has 17 inch wheels front and rear. Frame looks steel tube. Engine is a parallel twin with four valves and a single overhead camshaft. It looks like a 180 degree crank so standard twin fare. Be nice if it turned out to be 270 degree as would sound and feel live a V Twin at least.

It should be easy, cheap to service, is that a screw type valve (tappet)adjuster?
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Quick and easy to do though, plus with a 180 degree crank it will still sound like a vee twin. I really like the 250, but at my size I would need one strapped to each foot...

Sent using carrier pigeon...

Old enough to know better, but still too young to care...

:icon_no: Tall, 270 degree crank makes 'em V like.

I guess it really needs to be a v, as the parallel twin would not make the same torque, which is one of the attributes of the strom name?

I like its looks - good to see a round headlamp too, but I'd prefer 500cc! As a parallel twin, it really can't be a V Strom though (the clue's in the name!). So, in the spirit of Wees, Glees and all, perhaps we should call it the Pee Strom?

It doesn't matter where the cylinders are placed. It's the positioning of the crank-pin when each cylinder is at the point of ignition.  A parallel twin could be lighter and more compact than a "V" although the "V" could be narrower.

Yes it looks fine but must admit my heart sank when I realised which engine from their existing range it was (53.5 mm by 55.2 mm parallel 250 cc twin). The V650 or more correctly L650 engine we all know and love very likely began life as a 400cc for Japanese market reasons. Probably even down to 350 and as small as 250cc in some markets. That would be back in the glory days when Japanese bikes had no real competition on price. To use any of those previous or in between capacities would probably need one of the two existing larger, heavier frames to accommodate the size of the lump. Cost, weight, intimidating size and treading on the toes of 650 sales perhaps some of the reasons why they've come out with this new bike. And I'm sorry to say its very likely not even built in Japan, never mind uses much in the way of Japanese parts. To stay in business they have to build bikes they can make some profit on in the same places as their low priced competitors. And that's probably where this new bike is made.
Might be the country its made in lends a good steer to the new name we give it. Chee Strom, Chin Strom or even a Tai Strom anybody?

We don't know its Chinese. Or do we?

And what if it becomes really popular in the next few years because its an easy, affordable introduction to the world of adventure biking? And there's more owners sign up here than you could imagine. And having got a taste for it move onto the larger VStroms. I bet that's just what Suzuki are looking to nurture. And these new owners will be younger than the average moaning old gits that we can be are at times.

And what if all submissions for the next calendar are the new 250 VStrom with adorable young ladies aboard? I just might have had one too many aperitifs before my roast beef and yorkshire pudding but I can dream.....  :stirpot:

Just to add to the type of engine debate. Some on here might remember Honda producing a great little 250cc 4 valve single. It was fitted into a trail bike, the XL250 around 1971 and later on the CB250RS. Both were smashing little bikes especially the CB and was probably the best 250 four stroke Honda ever made. A similar type of engine in this new 250 'Strom would far better than a twin. Honda also produced a couple of 250cc "V" (or "L") twins which never really sold that well and would probably not be well suited (or at least no better than a parallel twin) to an adventure type bike. The new 'Strom appears to be largely Chinese in design and one would have to question material and manufacturing quality.

Standard Suzuki parts bin design. er..... SV 1000 / DL1000  ... SV650 / DL650. Sometimes it works better than others. The "Baby Strom" uses a fair few parts that are common with other models. Keeps the price down and does not require then to (excuse the pun) "re-invent the wheel" or the frame or the engine.

this looks like it could be a great little bike.  Comfortable ergos, economical to run - a great city bike or for every purpose other than fast freeway type stuff (which is a drag anyway).
May just be the ticket for smaller or relatively inexperienced riders

How about calling it a Mini Me Wee Strom. I think it would be a great little bike for tootling around town, if the price is right.
