Rear Wheel Squeeking
« on: November 06, 2016, 20:05:47 »
Been developing since early summer, bike gets a squeeking noise from about 55-60mph onwards! I can pull the clutch in and still hear it, clearly, with throttle engaged or not, still there braking or going round bends. I have got at least one tight spot on chain, but sprokets and chain not that old and still in fairly good nick, but struggling to identify what causing this noise! Or is this all to do with the chain!?
Passed its MOT recently with flying colours, and asked to check the rear of bike, mechanic said nothing wrong?

 Any help please.....

 Cheers all

When it starts squeaking, apply rear brake very gently, just to feel some braking, and see if noise goes away. If it does, it's rear pads/caliper.
Do this just to exclude rear brake as one of possible causes.
I have the same problem on my company car, Toyota Auris, and it's coming from the front. I did the same test and as soon as I touch the brake pedal it goes away. When I release it, it comes back.

I think I'd be removing the rear wheel & checking the bearings

Tried the gentle braking, no change! If it the bearings shouldn't they squeek all the time?

 Thanks

Will the sprocket move at all, could possibly be the cush rubbers squeaking if the sprocket bearing is badly worn. You said you had a tight spot on the chain.

since I ride with music blaring, my squeak had progressed to the noise made by an empty can blowing up and down the street. Yes it was the wheel bearing at about 23k miles.

Had the sprocket carrier bearing changed earlier this year, so should not be that, but rear wheel bearing?
