Departing Givi screens
« on: October 06, 2016, 13:00:12 »
Hi

A couple of days ago, whilst riding about a mile from my home, the sliding part of my Givi screen, decided it had seen enough of my riding, and company, and disappeared over my shoulder, never to be seen again, and I have looked three times in the area.

Now, a friend who works with acrylic materials, tells me that the material will compress over time, to the point where  (on the Givi screen) it will need tightening up to compensate for this compression, I did not know this!

Just thought I would let you know, and does anybody have a spare sliding part for a Givi screen lying around collecting dust, and if you would like to sell it to me, I would be most grateful.

Cheers

They are available separately, I stumbled across them on a UK site recently. I'll try and remember and update this post.

I can't see a screen just sliding up & detaching of it's own accord, particularly as they have a nipple on the bottom, unless your clamps were rather slack of course.

I lost one but only because I was trying to 'adjust' it at speed believe me they take some holding with a 90mph wind

Hi
My screen is for the Glee, and is the AF3101 version, but are the blades all the same?

particularly as they have a nipple on the bottom,
.  Please elaborate, mine just slid out until I drilled it and fitted two small plastic rivets at the bottom of the slides.

Are there not nipples at the bottom keeping the top part from slipping out?

Yes, small nipples but a nipple is a nipple

Not on mine. If I unlock the levers, it pulls straight out.

None on mine either.. :icon_no:

I really can't see how it can slide out unless the clamps let go.
Is your friend saying the part of the slide in the clamp got thinner and thus allowed the clamps to come undone?
If so I guess a simple solution would be to drill a hole in the bottom of one of the slides and put a plastic M3 nut & bolt in it, or a metal one for that matter, or a quick release pin of some type.

Are you blokes sure?
I've had two top parts, both have a tiny bobble at the bottom, the screen can still be pulked out but needs a jiggle to do so.

I've just checked mine and there are none... however it does look as if they have either worn off or have been filed off. The bottom 2cm on both sides looks to have been filed, or is extremely scuffed.

Those clamping brackets are adjustable. I've adjusted mines once, after 2 years of owning Givi Airflow, so now they clamp a bit tighter. You simply remove the top screen, leave the clamps loose and then turn a nut just a bit clockwise to adjust the tightness. Then you put the top screen back on and test. Takes few tests to adjust but mine is now perfect.

Hi

Rich.
Apparently acrylic can become slightly 'fluid' under compression, (under the clamps), so eventually the clamps lose their grip. (I am only repeating my colleagues words).

This was the second time the slider.blade had parted company with the bike, the first time was about a year ago, and the slider/blade was easily found and replaced.
I adjusted the clamps as 'Bosnjo' below mentions, but obviously this was not enough.

BlackrockFox, I will check, Ebay again, when I am back on there, and thank you for your help.

OK, here's a ratger moderate phone pic, if you look carefully there is a small ramp (rather than nipple ) at the lower end of the slides.

Hi Hondaman
I have received a second-hand screen (thank you PUTZ) and you are correct, there is a small raised section at the bottom of the slider.
I do not think this would stop the screen if a strong gust hit it at the right angle, and if you removed the screen often for cleaning purposes, it would soon wear down.

I will drill a small hole at the lower end and either use a 4mm nut and bolt, or one of the poppers Suzuki uses on their fairing pieces.

Cheers for now.
