electrics
« on: September 18, 2016, 01:48:49 »
just got my bike back from Suzuki, after the battery stopped charging.
They said the stator blew because of the heated grips, Sat Nav and aux. lights, drawing too much power.

What are peoples thought on this????

That's ignorance speaking. The stator runs hottest when the electrical load is lowest. The charging system always generates the maximum it can output for the revs it's running. The regulator shunts the excess into the stator where it is converted to heat. Suzuki finally figured it out and changed to a series type regulator rather than a shunt type on the Veek. A series type turns off the excess rather than shunting it. Running extra electrical devices is easier on the stator. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,20426.0.html

Stator problems are not uncommon enough. http://www.stromtrooper.com/information-vault/55796-poll-charging-system-problems-yes-no-what-bike.html
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Yeh, they need to learn something about electronics.
Lots of bikers worry about damaging their stator due to the load on it but it is just not possible to do.

Have they blamed you or charged you for this?

Utter rubbish .!! Was this a warranty issue ? If it was you shouldn't have been charged

They repaired it under warranty but the garage  said it was my fault
I did not tell them I am going to wire 2 extra rear lights in. Bullet Ledsham, either side of the pannier rack
