Oil pressure light - DL650
« on: September 14, 2016, 22:00:23 »
Hi, can anyone help please? Got a 2015 650 - done just over 4K. It seemed to be running a bit tough this morning after refuel - normal unleaded - thought it might just be my imagination. Cut out on way home as I slowed in traffic. Managed to cruise out of trouble. Noticed red oil pressure light was on as I slowed to a stop (ignition still on). Checked manual n it's a bit conflicting - one page says it's supposed to go off after 2 secs after turning to 'on' - another page says it's supposed to stay on until u start the ignition. It goes out when I turn on - and seemed OK the rest of the way home. Could anyone tell me if the red light is supposed to stay on until I start it - I never paid any attention before! Thanks

The oil light should go off virtually immediately after starting the engine, the light will come on as soon as the engine stops running

Oil pressure warning lights will stay on until the switch sees sufficient pressure - it can't do that until the engine is turning over. If you crank the starter long enough it will go out, but your engine will normally start before that.

Thanks both of u, the bloody manual suggests it's supposed to go out after two secs along with freeze indicator and fuel injection light which is what threw me - It stays on but does go off as soon as I start it - I'm hoping the cut out was just a one off - thanks

Maybe it really means within 2 seconds of starting the bike, but someone didn't write it clearly enough.

It's rare to have an actual oil pump problem. If the light is ever on with the engine running, or off with the engine not running, it is most often due to a bad oil pressure sensor. That's a sensor you want to make sure is working properly.
