tail bone pain
« on: September 02, 2016, 11:40:45 »
Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone else get tail bone pain on a Veek. Can happen in as little as 100 miles some days and by 200 I can hardly walk!  I have standard seat and peg lowering kit. Bought the shad seat but its no better really,  20miles at most. Anyone the same?  Took the bike to a few dealers today but they only offered 5k trade in for a march 15 Veek with 10000 miles so it has to stay.

Try an "Air Hawk". They can inflated/deflated to suit your needs. Not cheap, some dealers round here ask £140, but look on EBay maybe still around £90 as I paid for mine.

It's a big investment so if you can, 'try before you buy'.

There are two types of Airhawk, the very expensive neoprene version and the pvc version. I bought my wife a neoprene pillion one as she was finding the seat a PITA after just over and hour. She gave it the thumbs up after last weekends ride of over 2 hours. It was £174!!!! I have actually just ordered myself the cheaper version as I even find my new Tony Archer seat cannot match the seat I have on my GS.

I've a airhawk pillion pad at home I must try it but its a bit small. My wife never like it, always complaining about movin about on it no matter what amout of air in it.
Last weekend I done 270 miles with one stop and I was so sore I never looked near the bike for two days. And that was with the shad seat.
I think for tall long legged folk the footrests are too far forward.  Feels that way after sitting on other adventure bikes.

The Air Seat should be inflated and placed on the saddle. The then sit on it and use the valve to release air until you just touch down on the bike's seat. If when you test ride you feel a bit wobbley then let out some more air. You body heat can also affect the air pressure so be prepared to fiddle with it a bit until you get it just right. Also bear in mind, if your feet only just touch the floor, the air seat will raise you a little and it may affect your foothold on the road..
I couldn't ride my Harley without it although after a couple of hours I have to get off and walk about for twenty minutes or so. But then I am old and decrepit.

Makes you wonder about all those journalist who raved about the comfortable seat when the bike was launched doesn't it. Ours is a little bit more bearable after 6,500 miles, but no way is it a 300 mile day saddle, best we have done is 250 with a couple of stops.

I have resigned myself to the fact that no seat will ever be as comfy as the Corbin on my 1100GS. It is simply amazing. It is the comfiest seat on my property infact, including all those in my house!

I've the standard seat with peg lowering kit, I'm 6' 4 "  and I've  found it fine. For uber long days I have a Dan medica inflatable seat , same as air hawk  half the price! That said being a long standing back pain sufferer I'm acutely aware every persons anatomical set up is completely different.

Never had any problems at 6' and with mid-height saddle.  Can do 4-5hrs in saddle without any great discomfort.  Bend in the knees is always first to say time to get off for a stretch!

I bought a Putnams Inflatable Stadium Seat Cushion on the advice of people here. It's pretty handy on Katie as she's not the comfiest on longer trips. It cost me about £10 inc delivery from memory.

Maybe an option to try & see if it sorts your problem out without the expenditure on an airhawk.

Did 200 mile round trip today with three short stops and can't praise this bike enough for comfort.  No discomfort or fatigue at end of journey.  I fitted a V-stream some 4-weeks back and that helps to reduce journey fatigue.

Bought a little seat thingy called bumbagforbikers.co.uk.  Used it yesterday for 160 miles,  with the shad seat ( it's softer) no pain. It feels strange at first sitting on this, like an airhawk but I got used to it OK. Its not air but a thin bean bag really.  Was cheap and good reviews.  I'll keep it in the bottom on the top box and put in on for longer days

I think the website is www.bumbags4bikers.co.uk.

Anyway, how would you rate it with a standard seat?

I only used it for about 100 miles with the standard seat and to be honest the pain was creepin back in again.  I should point out I've suffered this tail bone pain on all my upright bikes just the Veek is the worst.  Combination of hard seat, high and forward pegs. With the standard seat an airhawk might work better but I hate the way you move about on them.

Took my low seat to Tony Archer today he said he has had a lot of Veek seats in to make more comfy which is not a good sign.
I had a lot of pain on a tour in July so decided to take it to Tony, he decided half inch foam and a gel insert should sort it out and all for £60 a lot cheaper than the air hawk

Maybe this mod from Rick can help. He cut the seat plastic around the tail bone area. Commented here:

And that's precisely why it's so difficult for a manufacturer to get a seat "right".
By my reckoning it IS a 300 mile seat, no problems at all.
