New Wee, twitchy throttle?

Hi All,

Picked up this beauty last week and have been struggling a little with the throttle control. I'm not sure if it's just me but when I'm trying to cruise along at slow speeds with a slight throttle I find it difficult to avoid the on off on off as I seem to be too close to the closed position. I've tried changing down but the bike doesn't seem to like the low revs? I've also noticed on a couple of occasions the headlights don't come on when I start it, is this likely to be the starter switch? Absolutely loving the bike though :D cheers

What speed are you trying to cruise at in what gear? Loss of headlights is a too common problem. http://www.stromtrooper.com/information-vault/71046-headlight-problems.html
The starter switch headlight bypass on K5 and later bikes is the most common problem area. Installing headlight relays early on is the best preventative action but once a problem occurs, it has to be fixed first.

Hi Greywolf, it seems to happen at low speeds the most, say 25mph when moving in slow traffic, seems hard to hold a constant low speed. When the bike is gaining speed no issues at all. Find the engine breaking on roll off is really tough so as soon as the injectors close you know about it! It's probably just me, will take some getting used to. Thanks for the post on the lights, I'll have a read. Cheers

I'd be in 3rd too at 25mph if it's free flowing, though try leaving it in 2nd if it's slow moving traffic - I do. It could be you need to get used to it though it won't hurt to try the following:

Try taking any excess slack out of the throttle cable, squirt WD40 inside the throttle housing (there's a hole underneath you can put the straw in), and if you can reach (possible without moving the tank) spray the hinge of the throttle body connecting arms (pic below) to see if that helps.

25mph in third should be smooth if the TPS is properly adjusted. Rider unfamiliarity is most often the problem. You can check the TPS adjustment easily. Look for the dealer mode connector.



Take off the cap and use an opened paper clip to connect the white/red wire with the black/white wire. Start the engine and let it warm up. You should see a -C00 on the display at idle, about 1300rpm. If the dash is at the top or bottom instead of in the middle, your TPS adjustment is good enough that it should not be a problem. The best adjustment will see the dash rise at about 2500rpm. Hold the throttle at 2500rpm for a second to see if the dash rises.

I had this on my Vee, fitted a TRE and the problem is history. I can maintain low speeds filtering etc, best thing I have ever fitted to my Vee and was like a night and day difference even my GF noticed the difference. It is not you it is the bike.

The TRE gets round Suzuki's crap restriction so EU bikes pass the emissions test.

Not sure if it can be fitted to a Wee? My symptoms were like yours, some folk say they do nothing, all I can say is that it cured the problem, the almost 'surging' nature of low speed filtering etc, stopped. I would have got rid of the bike if I could not cure it as I found it dangerous, I looked into it and read a few posts and gleaned that Suzuki restricted the motor electronically to pass EU emissions (US bikes etc are not affected).

A TRE won't help a Wee. The Vee is restricted by design of the ECU. The Wee is restricted by its lower maximum brake horsepower.

Definitely going to check the TPS this weekend. Had another week or so on the bike and there is a definite spot just about 3000k regardless of gear that seems to cause a very sudden and momentary loss of power every few seconds if you hold the rev in the exact spot. I am sure this is now not the throttle physically closing, something else is going on, could it be poor TPS adjustment?

The TPS is basically a potentiometer. A wiper arm slides on a carbon track to vary the resistance. The carbon track eventually gets worn by the arm contact and the throttle position doesn't register properly. Changing the TPS adjustment usually just moves the worn point at which the fuel provided goes wrong. Replacement is normally required.
