Wiring In A Voltmeter
« on: May 27, 2016, 14:38:12 »
For all the electrical gurus out there plese could you help.

From a recent thread, I decided to buy this voltmeter
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Universal-fit-RED-LED-Alternator-Battery-Warning-Light-Charge-status-monitor-/322107884957?hash=item4aff20459d:g:ojUAAOSwGvhT2isz
The question is where do I connect the red and black wire for best results?  The instructions say that it should be connected to the output side of the ignition switch, does this mean splicing into the wire or is there a terminal connector on the switch?

Any advice much appreciated as I would like to try fit it this weekend.

Loads of different connectors on the market. Your best bet is to strip a bit off from the ignition wire and solder your red wire onto it and heat shrink it so it is both permanent and not exposed, however, there are other connectors that will do the job.

This is just an example of a connector that could do the job but I prefer the soldering method.

Splice connector. The advantage of this method is that you can just pull the cable out if you don't want it anymore or if you want to put a digital one in its place.

Wire it to a decent earth and a good ignition live, the best probably being either the brake light switch circuit or as you have said the live from the ignition .

Can't say for other models but on a glee the orange horn wire is a good switched live, use a twin spade splitter.
For cripes sake keep away from crimp/scotch lock type connectors. Do a decent job or not at all.

Blackvwire to a good earth or ideally straight to battery.

A Posi-Tap is a good connector for those who don't solder. The spear is rustproof and its penetration of the insulation does not damage the wire.

Guillotine type connectors tend to break strands and corrode. Don't use them.

Just go to eBay and type posi tap and click UK only. There are loads of suppliers. Same with Amazon.

Or learn to solder. There are plenty of how-to videos.

Just a thought but as I have wired in a Bigpie fuse box and a USB socket. Could I tap into the USB wires (red & black), if so I might have a go at soldering as if I do totally mess it up I can replace the wire and would it give an accurate reading?

If you have an unused fuse in the block, you can use that. Otherwise, that's a viable plan.
