Will do,there is so much conflicting information about this area I never know what to follow, also the old pads have plenty life in them with even wear not sure if they are of use to anyone near me?? Only changed because I wanted double h pads.

It's not a big deal.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

My rear brake has the shims, my front brake does not, I use a smear of copper ease grease on the rear of pads, and have no issues.
As GW states, no deal really

What do they do anyway?

I have had some brake pads that come with shims & an insulation plate, the thinking is that some pads want to hold in the heat to get the pad material hot, others have no insulation as they want the heat to conduct through to the caliper.
So what's the job of this stainless steel shim when not used as part of an insulator?

I fitted them anyway with a little grease on back of shim for good measure.went out tested the rear and it's much better than before either the original pads I opted for semi sintered v pads on a whim, got to do the front tonight so will carry on with the shims

What do they do anyway?

Some bikes have them and some don't but if your bike has them I'd suggest keeping them . They can help dissipate the heat which can cause brake fade and help stop squeals in your brakes.
To buy they can be expensive for what they are so keep them.
