Kappa top box mount
« on: April 20, 2016, 21:59:11 »
Evening all. I needed a cheap 35 ltr top box to fit my 2014 Vstrom 1000 for commuting and a bit of weekend away riding. My standard panniers were just short of the space I needed so I bought a Kappa K35NT, lovely bit of kit and cheap.
The universal fixing kit went straight on to my rear rack, still a bit confused why Suzuki fitted a plastic rack to this model but Hello ho, and Bobs the proverbial.
Since fitting it I noticed on some web sites and magazines that a fixing plate can also be fitted to the rack prior to the box base plate. Did I miss a trick here, should I have fitted this plate first or because the base plate went straight on should I not be worried?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have a couple of 46 litre boxes with plate.

See my bits for sale.

You're missing the point slightly mate, I don't want to buy any kit just some advice.

Basically, is it OK to fit the box mounting plate directly on to the rear rack of the 2014 VStrom 1000?

I fitted a Kappa monokey case using the Givi plate kit SR3101, which included a metal plate between the bike rack and the monokey rack. For monolock boxes like yours, Givi and Kappa recommend a similar plate (SR3101M - 'KR' is Kappa equivalent) underneath the universal monolock rack supplied with your box. I'm guessing it gives a slightly more rigid base and raises the box a bit higher. But if your box fits securely with the universal rack going straight onto the bike's rack, I wouldn't worry......so long as it's secure!

Apologies for getting the wrong end if the stick again!!!! but a good plug for my bits for sale.

The plate for my top boxes (for sale) fastened straight to the plate with bracket basically a square washer with slot on the plate side and these bracket on the underneath.

Sorry picture is downside up.

These brackets were used on the original rack and also the racks which had the panniers racks also.

Although this is not a kappa rack it uses the same principle.  I also had to drill holes for this plate, but the brackets may moved to a convenient locations so to avoid drilling.

probably best to sandwich the rack with some form of plate or big diameter mudguard washers( preferably plate ) just to keep the stress load on the plastic spread out and not to just rely on a couple of small washers from some universal kit , I'd sometimes worry about the steel and welds on my subframe I do think that Suzuki's steel supplier used fanta instead of coke in the foundry process , so their plastic has probably got some trace of sherbet or marzipan in there somewhere

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've decided to splash out on a mounting kit from SW Motec. Ironically more expensive than the box but better safe than sorry. I just don't trust a plastic rack to hold a weight that may bounce up and down for mile after mile, at least with the fixing kit it bolts on to the sub frame of the bike. Although expensive, I always look at getting at least half my money back from ebay when I move the bike on so its not too much of a hit

I will stand correcting but I am sure my Wee rack is made from aluminum and not plastic.I think I would have spotted it whilst drilling to bolt my Kappa mounting plate to it.

Yup, bit of a cheap cop out if you ask me. If it had been aluminium or steel I would have trusted the universal fixing plate

I fixed a universal to the rear rack. It's best photo I can find on phone at present. Sticks out with the silver rack which I've now had replaced under warranty as the silver wore off. It's now black but good contrast here.

Finally got this attachment adapter and mounting plate from SW Motec. The box now feels very secure and the mounting plate is more substantial than the universal one supplied. I have a Monolock box but the mounting plate serves both this and the monokey version with a simple additional bit bolted on the back of the plate making it a more solid attachment.

Like I say, a bit pricey but worth it for peace of mind.

I'm Curious - I am just in the process of looking to reuse my Kappa monkey base-plate. So my concern is that there are only the two bolts nearest the seat - yet these adapter kits seem to show 4 x bolts. Having had a close look at the plastic rack on the 1000, I wonder how the back 2 x bolts fasten - do they just clamp onto the plastic rack?

There is a Givi/kappa fitment kit for the new model DL1000 and DL650.
The kit includes two support arms that come up from below the Suzuki plastic carrier.
The two bolts on the rear end of the Givi/Kappa plate go into these support arms.

What Kappa plate do you have?
