Possible water in engine oil
« on: March 18, 2016, 17:50:50 »
Hi I have just bought a 2015 650 V-Strom with little over 2K on the clock, the bike is in very good condition A beautiful ride.
I took it to work to day for the first time and when on the side stand noticed the oil through the level window was creamy. It lives in a damp garage and I only travel 11.5 miles to and from work.....I have some 10W 40 Castrol semi synthetic oil as specified by Suzuki.
Is this normal and should I change the oil?

Regards Rob G

Rob - type milky oil into the forum search box.

Then, (when you're less worried), you could pop a post in the " Introductions" section.

As above.

Now the weather is warming up it might burn off though it may need an oil change to resolve fully. Happens every winter.

Gibbog

I have had the same problem.
Take the tank off and the air filter cover, there is a plastic mesh next to the air filter, it will be very wet with water under it. dry it all out, put back together. It will be OK.

Take it for a longer run every now & again to get everything nice and hot.

Almost correct. What you do is post in Introductions first, then ask your questions  :)

Thanks blokes...put my mind at rest. I have an oil filter and good oil on the way. Will change it asap....thought it could be the/a head gasket but sounds like its not.
God I love this bike, my first one in thirty years.

The condensation only stays on the plastic parts like the oil level window and filler cap. The metal parts get hot enough to boil off the water. Unless you are due for an oil change anyway, you don't need to change the oil just because of the mayonnaise on the plastic parts. Once it gets warm enough, that will go away and it doesn't do any harm.

I've had it appear on every bike I've had with oil windows. Appears around November and goes end of March. Even If I do an oil change during this time, it is there with the new oil after a few days of short rides. A long ride will get rid of it, but it'll come back soon enough.
It's not enough water to cause issue with the cooling system.

Ride and forget.
