XJ600 - I connected the battery and turned on the petrol gave it half choke and it fired up third jab. However, the clutch would not free up whatever I tried.  My friendly bike shop said if it's been laid up for a while ( it has) the plates may be stuck up with old oil or oil that is too thick.
I bought some modern 10/40 a new filter and a sump plug washer and he is ordering a clutch cover gasket for tomorrow. Back home I drain the oil and yes it looks like straight 50 grade. I removed the clutch cover and pulled out the pates which were very stuck together.
I'll pat them down with kitchen roll to remove whatever in on them and then apply some 10/40. True to form, as found on the rest of the bike, one of the clutch spring bolts was a rather badly mauled Phillips head thing. I had to rumage in my nuts and bolts boxes to find one that looks like an almost perfect match. Being a hex head, like the originals, I can at least apply the correct torque to it now.

Yes, I don't get to change my own tyres much either, on average every two years on my commuter.

My last set were not fully worn , just got a bit out of shape which felt off at times. Bloody great budget tyre the street radials are though, especially in the wet.

XJ600 - DVLA sorted out the incorrect VIN number and the new V5 arrived in the post today.  I just need to collect the new clutch gasket ( family duties yesterday stopped play) install the cover, sump plug, new filter and refill with oil, go on line and tax the beast and then it'll be ready for a test run.... if only it wasn't raining and the forecast shows it won't stop until tomorrow. :rain:  Actually there has hardly been a day without rain since late June and today's forecst is a giddy 15 degrees at best.  I think I'll write to the Met Office and complain. I'll tell them "Oiy,   sort this weather out...we're not northerners you know".

As I mentioned in the Moaning Old Git thread I've had an issue getting a wheel balance stand.
Two days ago I ordered one from "ABBA" and today it was delivered ( although not by Agnetha )  It is really well built and very much up to their usual standard. It was around £103 delivered so not a cheap oriental jobbie. I suppose you get what you pay for still holds true.  When it stops raining I'll wander out to the garage and get some work done - maybe around Wednesday if the forecast is accurate.

Hi Brockett, I've been thinking of getting a wheel balance stand but wanted a quality built version. Can you post a link to the one you got, please.  :thumb:

https://abbastands.co.uk/product-detail.asp?item=wheel-balancer&pid=14

Check the wheel size it can handle meets your needs.

There's some postage charge on this as well.

When you see the rubbish that is being sold on EBAY that can cost this much and more I feel sure the ABBA product is better quality.

Today I went round with a torque wrench and checked before first test ride.
New tyres, painted wheels, new wheel bearings front and rear.
Brakes:- new pistons and seals, painted calipers and renewed pin seals.  Fitted braided lines
Forks:- new bushing and seals and fitted gaiters.
Stripped and painted swing arm and re greased bearings.
New chain and sprockets.
New oil filter . Drain and refill oil. ( Air filter was new)
The work carried out was completed in order to get the bike up and running. I had never fitted tyres or balanced a wheel. Never fitted a modern chain with a reveted link. Never stripped and rebuilt forks. It has been a fun learning experience and if the engine and gearbox is sound I may strip the bike in the winter and get all the paintwork done properly powder coat etc.

Top job, looks lovely.
At the back of my mind I'm considering going back to that era of bike at some point.
I detest the obsession with electric  and computer gizmos, don't want or need rider modes, radar, quick shifters or any of that type of crap.

You had me at gold wheels Brocket.  :bow-blue:

A stunning achievement. :thumb:

All that glisters isn't gold etc ...Yesterday evening I went for trip round the block to see what would fall off and nothing did.  :happydance: Today I went to meet the gang in Norfolk and had a lovely ride. The bike handled really well and the Hagon shock gets a big thumbs up from me. However the Horrid, no, I mean really tacky little indicators had been reduced by 25% as one fell off somewhere. I hope no other vehicle was struck by it. I always intended changing them and am now wondering if I can fit LED indicators. Has anyone on here done such a thing and can offer me some advice on what to do and what to avoid. Also I am thinking LED  driving light. As you may imagine the XJ does not have 'always on' lights like a modern bike and maybe the alternator output will be strained when driving with the lights on all day.  I would go for an LED headlight if that was something doable and legal. Any thoughts?

Changing to LED will lighten the load on the stator but I'd check the charging rate as you go, you should be fine though.

You can fit LED indicators as long as you have an inline resistor or an LED flasher relay, without them they'd flash far to fast.

As for an LED headlight , you'd need to change the whole unit because fitting a modern LED bulb to your current headlight will not give off the correct beam , it'll be all over the place.

The legalities for the headlight are the beam has to be correct and the indicators cannot flash more than 2 times a second or 120 times a minute.

XJ600 -  Poor running may be due to the petrified moss and green gunge that has moved in the carbs. I am hoping a few cans of carb cleaner and good squirt from the airline will clear things a bit.
At least a check of the TPS shows it to be in range. Although ... the book says good is 5000 RPM bad is 1000 or 10000 RPM However mine shows 5500 RPM . I hope that is a good sign. I did try to tweak it a little. but it drops to the lower level or jumps to the higher level with a very small rotation of the sensor.

Changed the rear disk and pads, cleaned all the calipers and pistons, greased slider pins, bled the system adjusted and oiled the chain.

Then the rain came, so no ride to bed in the new pad and disk.  :bawl:
