Painting Plastic
« on: January 20, 2016, 18:13:40 »
The Top Box which came with the DL650 I just bought has had a tough life, it looks like it has been thrown down some concrete stairs.

There are some deep scratches and lots of scuffs

I did consider wallpapering it with V-Strom.co.uk stickers but before I resort to that I looked into plastic paint.

Halfords do a plastic primer and a dark grey paint in an aerosol. So.....Let's give it a go  :fix:

I rubbed out as much of the deep scratching as I could and gave the whole lid a rub down with wet and dry, starting with coarse and working up to a fine. I don't expect it to be perfect but hopefully it will be an improvement.

All rubbed down and ready for primer. Watch this space.

The primer has covered well, I'm getting a bit carried away now and trying a bit of filler in the deepest marks, no idea if it will stay.

The top coat went on well and dried with a much better finish that I could have hoped for...But... The dark grey colour is a bit weird.

So, another £5 at Halfords for some more Plastic Bum paint, this time in black.

A quick rub down with a damp Sunday Times and on goes the black. It doesn't dry anywhere near as shiny as this.

A couple of strategically placed decals to hide some scrapes on the insert and....

Ta daaa...

That's brought the box back to life very nicely. Was that filler-primer, or straight primer?

@Rusty Nuts - It's just the Plastic Primer from Halfords, I don't think it's a filler primer.

If I did it again I wouldn't bother with the body filler I tried, in a couple of places (funnily enough under a decal), instead of scratchy bits I ended up with blobby bits.

All in all though it has to be worth a tenner in paint (assuming you buy the right colour first time).  :violence-smack:
