Just got back from a weekend in Wales with my new ECU. Bike is loads better, especially at low revs in second gear.
Accelerates much smoother as well. Still don't understand Suzuki's approach to this issue but the fix is well worth it.

Where can I see the ecu number? just going to look at a 2014 Veek, doubt it's had the ecu replaced.

The ecu is below the battery under the seat so its going to be difficult to see any numbers without removing something.
But you can tell by the cold start procedure.  With the new ecu the bike revs up to 2000rpm for maybe 5-10 seconds then  down to tick over. With old ecu it never goes over 1500rpm and drops to tick over rpm very quickly.

Had '00' ECM replaced yesterday by Cupar Motorcycles with the '02' model on a DL1000 A4 Desert. No hassles great service and a BIG difference. Bought bike in April knowing that if ECM was dodgy could get it replaced and no massive problems but stalled a couple of times but 'spat back' frequently. Low rev vibes were also noticeable. Did ~200 miles since fitting and now a lot smoother on the takeoff and no need to slip clutch on slow roundabout incase it stalls.

If u have an affected Veek, get it done

Just got a 2014 1000, asked dealer about ECM issues and got this back:

"I've had a reply from Suzuki about an ECM and although your bike is out of warranty they are willing to make a contribution to the cost.

The cost of the unit is £747.18.  Suzuki will pay £261.51 towards it which leaves a balance to pay of £485.67."

If you've only just bought the bike tell the dealer you are going to reject it as not fit for purpose. There's clearly an issue with the ECU's otherwise Suzuki wouldn't have replaced any.

Very generous of Suzuki!  My bike does run better with the new ecu but I'd not pay 500 quid to find out. An x-tre box helps the bike out with the old ecu (I just left in on with the new ecu)  for about 100 quid, pc5 or the like better again but expensive.

I'd still contact Suzuki customer services direct and tell them you're not happy...

May be this issue needs reporting to VOSA (or whatever they're called these days). Bikes that randomly stall/cut out are downright dangerous and should be subject to a recall.

I'd go to a different dealer. Choose a dealer that someone else (in this thread) has gone to & had it replaced without issue!
This seems very dependant on each individual dealer!!

The answer from the Dealer came from Suzuki directly.  The bike has just turned 3 years old

You have to challenge them with the likes of danger and fit for purpose. I too struggled with them as I requested a new ECU when the bike was just over 3 years old. I was possibly the most loyal customer of Suzuki since 98 with 24 bikes and I wrote a very long and strong letter to them. They came back with the usual as a good will gesture and gave me one. That is rubbish this should have been a full recall of all the early models with that ECU.
Those of us that bought this great bike when they first came out had to also endure the recalls etc yet they still dragged their feet when it came to releasing the ECU's.
I hope all goes well for you as when you have the new ECU you will really like the bike, mine is now nearing 30,000 miles and I love it.
Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

Was you there when they called Suzuki? as my dealer gave me the run around and said Suzuki were unaware of a problem, which they most definitely were.
Phone Suzuki Customer services yourself, and say about unfit for purpose, danger to your safety etc etc and tell them you are aware that they have changed numerous other ECU's due to this issue.

Vera, have a good look through this thread... eg Jez (p.13) says "Just called Suzuki Customer Services new number 0808 501 1959. Spoke to a very nice lady who informed me that any work out of warranty would not normally be considered. However, she informed me that Suzuki are now fully aware of ECM Unit issues on certain DL1000 AL4 and AL5 models and have a list of AL4's and 5's that would be considered for a new ECM unit even if now out of warranty. I then asked so if I were to purchase a two year old DL1000 which was now out of warranty could I check the list before the purchase? She said no problem if it was on the list then they would inform a local dealer to change the ECM unit. Result! :lala:

Just got off phone to Suzuki UK.  Our bike is on the list that the Service Bulletin covers. However, It is an `upgrade` not an `issue` and as bike is out of warranty Suzuki`s goodwill gesture is half the price of the part (If fitted at a service) then the dealer will charge to fit so hence the £485 it would cost me. So on top of £390 for the service - we are going to have to put up with it.  I`m guessing this may stem from the previous owner having it serviced by a non-dealer (All others were at supplying dealer) at 2 years and 2 weeks old last year otherwise it may have been picked up???

Oh well.

I still would not accept that I serviced mine after the first year. Just keep pressing them especially threaten legal action or spreading issue on the internet.

Suzuki and many others never cover out of warranty, the original owner must never have pushed for the new ecu. And I know of a few others that haven't as well.  Something to bear in mind if buying a secondhand 14-15 strom.
Get a x-tre. The cheap ones on ebay that lose the Gear indicator cost 30 quid and the better healtech ones are 100 quid. This helps the bike for little outlay.  Good luck.

It was worth looking into but am just going to leave it and not keen on fitting something that has "For Race Use Only" written on it that will require changes to the Insurance.
