Friend in trouble
« on: July 06, 2015, 23:10:31 »
My mate has taken his 2014 V Strom to Sweden the last 200k was in terrible conditions, snow, sleet and rain ,when he stopped and turned the key off the engine kept running he managed to cut the engine with the red button but the head lights stayed on to fix this he had to disconnect the battery, next time he tried to turn off the engine the red button would not work so he had to disconnect the battery to stop the engine. any suggestions please.

IIRC someone in Canada has had their ignition switch replaced due to running after taking the key out. Another idea is to get some WD40, take the tank off and spray anything that looks electrical with it that is under the seat / tank and around the ignition switch.

It's already known fault that hapens after pressure washing or riding in wet/salty/muddy roads. Here is the link to the thread and solution:

If he can't get to a dealer, he should lift the tank, disconnect the connectors at the front bellow the tank, clean and dry them the best he could. When he gets back home, it's dealer visit.

I'm actualy considering buying a new Vee, reading stuff like this then puts me clean off the idea, there's a good deal still going with extras thrown in.Hope your friend gets help from a Suzuki dealer over there.
Maybe I'll wait and see what Honda bring with the new Africa Twin.

It has been rectified by new type of connectors on newly manufactured Vee2. If you are worried about this problem don't buy 2014 leftovers. However, simple bicycle tyre chamber over connectors and zip-ties on it's ends prevents the problem.

Sorry to all for the late reply I`ve had problems logging in, so my mate is now at the northern most point in Norway after having his electricial problems sorted out at a bike shop, I don't know if they were Suzuki dealers or not he`s been in touch with TR Bridgend and they have asked him to bring it in when he gets back so we will wait and see what they say, thanks to all for your help.

So all new '15 plate bikes should be fine??

All the best to your mate up in Norway, been there many times but was on two pieces of wood with a gun and a large container on my back for Queen and Country, loved the place and great fun watching the Northern Lights waiting for the Russians to invade!!    :obscene-drinkingchug:

That`s why he`s gone back to reminisce and see the old haunts when he was in Signals.
