Plastic dip or Repaint?
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:21:00 »
Currently got the luggage mounts off the Vee;

 Now I did intend to remove the old paint and replace it with the same silver and finish off with a lacquer to protect it from the obvious scuffs. Now I'm half way through removing the old paint and it's not coming off very easy!

My question to all on here; has anyone ever tried to plastic dip their bike, especially in places where pillion passengers might continually scuff?

or

Should I just persevere and respray it with the original paint colour?

Al

The luggage rack (at least on the GT) is plastic coated. I've just had mine redone by http://www.wtacoatings.co.uk/.

Good, no complaints at all. The parts are media blasted then sprayed with a dry electrically charged powder before being baked in an oven. Mine was fairly rusty before it was done & I'm happy with the results.

That looks more like powder coating than plastic dip.

It is powder coating.

Didn't correct the op in case it came across as cheeky! Although reading my initial response I did refer to it as plastic coating, still technically correct though as powder coating typically relies on an electrically thermoplastic polymer.

Easy to do: go to charity shops & buy all the old LPs they have, chuck them in a big pan & heat until melted then dip the parts in. Let the excess run off but rotate the part around a bit just to even the layer: Bob's your auntie! :stirpot:  :eusa-doh:

Do not try this at home as it should only be done by highly skilled trained marmosets wearing space suits!!

Depends on the finish you're after:

Easy listening would give a pretty smooth finish - hard rock might be a bit heavy but avoid any recent pop as it has no substance to it at all....

Avoid any X Factor records too, as they only last for 6 weeks.
