engine temperature
« on: May 26, 2015, 22:08:06 »
Hi there, just a couple of quick simple questions, I have K7 DL1000 and normally I can be out all day and the temp gauge never goes above 2 bars unless I'm in traffic then maybe sometimes it mights occasionally sneaks up to 3 bars but soon goes back to two bars until the other day ..... so I'm in the middle of doing all the normal checks ..... the only thing that has changed is I have serviced my bike the other day. any ideas?

the other thing was that my uncle has the DL650 on a 10 plate and his normal temp he said is on three bars .... would that be right or is his running high?

My Glee always runs at 3 bars. Don't think the fan comes on unless it's unusually hot and I'm stopped with the engine running.

3 bars is normal unless you are on an extended run where the air will cool the engine and you will get 2 bars. The fan will kick in at around 4 bars especially in traffic.

Did your servicing include a coolant change? Could there be air in the system? When I last changed the coolant on my Wee there was a significant top-up of the coolant required after the initial fill and a quick test ride to shake it all about.

I had similar worries about my K7 DL1000, my fan wouldn't kick in at all.

I took her to my back street fixer, and he said it was one of two things: Fan Fxxked or Temp Sensor.

I changed the fan, which didn't fix my problem, so I changed the Temp sensor, that worked :occasion-balloons:
The temp sensor ( on the DL1000) is on the lower side of the radiator and is the cheapest and easiest repair to carry out.
I would go for that first before buying a new fan.

Although, as said in previous posts 3 bars is the norm.

Good luck

Normal number of bars for different models as follows. Fan starts after 3 bars showing in all models. None should ever go to 4 bars.

Wee - 3 unless cool and rainy or cold outside, then may drop to 2.
Vee - 2 unless stop and go traffic when hot outside.
Glee and Veek - always 3.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s
