BIKESAFE
« on: August 17, 2009, 15:50:04 »
Just wanted to tell you all about BIKESAFE.

I attended this course the weekend(all day sat and sun), this one was run by West Midlands Police.

Saturday:
9 - 11 classroom session talking about various hazards and assessment

11 - 1 Out on the road with a Police motorcyle following assessing your town riding

Lunch

2 - 4 Off road course, to improve slow handling ( including help from Craig Jones )

4 - 5 Craig put on a show of some of the mad things he gets upto.

Sunday:
9 - 12 classroom session talking about positioning, speed etc

Lunch

1 - 4 Ride out with Police motorcycle following, country roads etc.

Excellent 2 days, the blokes at Tally Ho! in Brum are a great bunch.

Worth doing if you get the chance.

Did a London Bikesafe day last year prior to doing my RoSPA training.  Great day out and learned loads.  The key is definitely to go in with an open mind and be fairly receptive to any criticism/comments on your riding and you'll come out on top.

I'd love to do a Bikesafe course but as far as I know they don't do them in Strathclyde Police area. They did once but they were heavily over subscribed apparently.

Anyone know any better?

Take a look on the BIKESAFE website - http://www.bikesafe.co.uk - it'll give countrywide locations.  Well worth doing even if you only come away remembering or taking notice of a small part of it.

Thames Valley police don't seem to do one either, so if you live in Bucks, Berks, Oxon, etc; tough.  :-(

Did the Hampshire one back in February, a brilliant day with tons of feedback from the staff.

They have eyes in the backs of their heads, and don't miss anything, amazing.

And as for the 'making progress' element, seeing the looks you get from others when being tailed by a police bike is priceless!

Well recommended.  :thumb:

It varies from force to force - depeding on how much government money they get out of the force budget.

Generally they range from free to around £50 for the day.

I had a butchers at the bikesafe website site and then the Kent Police link. Sent an email a few months ago and they never replied......shame as I'd be up for it and at a resonable price too.  Maybe I'll have a word with a real police biker when they next 'police' the local bike meet tonight.
Remember - Enjoy it!

I've done one before. Very good. Well worth it. Unfortunatly I'm at work so can't make it.

One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full.  And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?"  So I drank the water.  No more problem.

Just did the met police bikesafe course today, it was really really good. I can't recommend it enough.

I will be signing up for IAM soon and had a really fun day as well as learning a lot, currently they are giving away free stuff too like hi-vis jackets and the IAM how to be a better rider book which is brilliant.

I recommend everyone should do it a few months after they pass (or asap if you passed ages ago).

Did a Kent Bikesafe last week - excellent fun and learnt lots. What was the RoSPA training like?

The MET do one from the ACE CAFE  (A40/A406 juct.) which is only 25miles away??

I did my second bikesafe in august with south yorks police, a top day out, if you haven't already done one do it now. In the current climate of public spending cuts I can see them pulling the plug on bikesafe.

Strathclyde Police say this:

"As we have some of the most visited biker roads around, our Police Motorcyclists are busy during the summer months interacting with the motorcycling community to promote safer riding. Our aim is not to spoil their enjoyment of these demanding and scenic roads but to encourage them to ride safely and in a responsible manner. "

Which I interpret as meaning, "We are too darned busy to run courses, but you might meet us on the road".
And indeed you probably will. If you are not careful you will be encouraged to ride safely by means of fixed penalties or court citations.
