11200 miles - sticky throttle
« on: March 20, 2015, 12:37:12 »
Hi All,

I'm in need of some divine intervention, or help please.

I have had my 2014 V-Strom 1000 12 months now and done 11200 miles. Was riding back from North Yorkshire yesterday and noticed that I had to push throttle off to stop it from revving up.

I have lifted the tank and noticed that the throttle link rods are not going back to their original position when the throttle is loosed. I have to roll the throttle off ever so slightly to get the throttle back to its normal position, thus normal revving.

Rightly or wrongly I have sprayed the linkages with a bit of WD40. I thought it might need a little lube as its done a bit of mileage, but its still sticking.

Has anyone any suggestions, advice please?

Thanks in advance.

May need to adjust throttle cables as they may have become slacker over time. Not sure how this is done but it may be on another thread or someone else may be able to explain.
Life is short - You have to enjoy it on a Wee-Strom!

Hi There,

Thanks for that...done it. No difference. I was going to lube the cable, but have read somewhere that it shouldn't be done on a 1000 as the cable is coated.

I'll keep poking... :-)

Cheers.

I think my warranty was only for 12 months!! I could be very wrong...I'll go check.

Although I am reluctant since Suzuki mechs over filled it with oil by 200ml!!

Cheers.

That's a relief :-). Although Ill still have a play.

I have the service manual and it mentions nothing about lubing the cable, but does mention grease on the throttle link rod linkages. I'll go and investigate further.

Thanks.

I had to saturate mine with WD40 a few times before they freed up. (Had cruise control when they were sticking...)

Throttle linkages were fine. So sprayed more WD40 on the surrounding areas.  Seems to have done the trick, but I'll go for a ride before before I claim victory. If not it can go back to the dealers.

Yep, that's what I have...cruise control...lol.

I reckon the springs are just too weak, so as a bit of corrosion builds up they can't cope.

I also noted that the electrical couplings just above the radiator, underneath the air box were corroding...badly!!  Managed to pry them apart, give them a clean and spray with ACF and added some ACF grease too. Hope it helps.  I did notice at speed rain water was shooting up between the forks/steering and into my face. That'll be the same water corroding the electrical couplings...bad design..IMO.

Thanks.

I need to check that electrical block out too - have avoided it so far though with all the recent postings on it I best sort it out sooner than later.
