Givi top box plate fitting
« on: October 06, 2014, 20:36:12 »
Received the base plate today for the Givi  Trekker top box. Seems straight forward...

Into the garage it is!

The diagram is worse than the job! In reality it's pretty straightforward. Call me paranoid but I added plenty of grease between mating faces and on the bolts etc. The nuts on the back of the bolts which hold the cross brace in place are a bit fiddly but overall it's not too bad.

When I had my DL in March there were no plates available so I adapted the DL650 plate that I had. Today one of the bolts failed that went into the sub frame so ordered the genuine article only to find out Givi do not have any and cannot give a date for delivery. Boo.

 :)
Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

Looks great. I've the same top box and it's great - gets 2 Shoei helmets and gloves in there when stopped for breakfast or coffee or whatever!

Well my thinking was the extra room in the top box will make up for the small space in the stock panniers lol

And you can park your car in it thereby getting both in the garage.

Whenever we go on a trip, I always end up carrying some of the other lads gear in the box. Bottles of water, thermal liners you name it. can't beat a decent box. Just need to look at a tank bag now to store the battery chargers etc....

I suspect you have a couple of bolts and two washers left over, ie parts list numbers 7 and 17. Where do they fit?. Have you noticed how poor the coating is on the metal parts, keep an eye on rust which will soon appear.
The poor quality finish is equal to the poor quality finish on the grab rail. Has anybody else complained to Suzuki about the grab rail?
I have heard that some people have had a replacement better quality finished rail.

I have a couple of bolts spare. But I didn't use the bushes Nos 13. I have the genuine panniers option so the pannier fixings have a slightly different arrangement. I used the bushing that came with the Suzuki pannier fixing mounts instead of No13 as there appeared to be a compatibility error.

I agree the paint is thin on the Givi brackets and the Suzuki grab rail has a certain plastic feel to it, probably to keep the weight off. Think it will be a case of Hammerite smooth on the Givi brackets in a couple of years...

I really can't understand why you haven't used the spacer, 13. I too have the pannier option. The fitting of this spacer does not affect the fitting as described in the instructions. You will probably have gathered that Givi have made a cock up in the item list. I purchased the SRA 3105, aluminium one. Parts were missing and the instructions for that are bizarre. I have written to Givi UK and complained about that and the quality control. I was in dire need for a top box for a tour otherwise I would have returned it.

The Givi supplied spacers are not as deep as the Suzuki ones. Correction it was spacer 12 not 13 that I was referring too. I didn't want to put a shallower spacer in place as when tightened would stress the Suzuki pannier mount and probably distort / crack it
