Awful fuel consumption
« on: September 12, 2014, 21:24:00 »
Hi,

My Vee is only doing about a hundred miles to a full tank. First couple I put down to it being new to me etc, but it's not got any better. Anyone got any ideas of what - if anything - might be causing it?

It's a K2, 51K and runs fine. I know it had an injection system done as 38K in 2009 and the last service was in Oct 13 and it's only done about 1.5K since then. They did indicate they thought it might have a fuel pump/ECU problem but fitted new plugs which seemed to work.

I have noticed that if I turn the ignition on too quickly the FI light stays on in both modes, but if turned slowly it's fine.

No drips or leaks noticed, and a petrol smell only when the engine it hot from slow riding in traffic.

The only other thing of note is that it has gone down the road at some point, on the left side as far as I can make out. It has what appears to be new switchgear on the right (starter, lights etc).

Ta,
Mick

Blimey! Are your brakes binding? You've either got a fuel leak or only three gears. How many litres do you put in to fill it up after 100 miles?

lol. Brakes aren't binding And I fill up when the fuel pump symbol starts flashing. Around town I rarely get into 5th - that's Ipswich for you. I can't find any drips and there's no smell of petrol except as per my first post.

Make the FI fault come on, put it in dealer mode and get us any codes showing, that'll be a good start.

make sure you have the seat off before you get the fi fault and don't switch it off until you have the code otherwise you will lose the error

Throttle position sensor could require adjustment, what does the temp guage show? If it's reading low poss thermostat causing it to run on the cold map.

Air filter OK and no obstructions to the airbox?

Check that the correct spark plugs were fitted.

No sign of exhaust damage?

Also check that the air inlet temp sender is connected on the left hand side, green plug, during the collision repair it may have been left off, or mixed up with the engine temp sender. Try swapping the connectors.

when you park the bike up for the night , do you turn the ignition off ???

Sorry ... just being flippant  :shy:

I have not got a clue, did get my MPG up from 44 mpg to 66.7 mpg by sensible riding.

Bear in mind that the indicator on my Vee tends to come on after I've used around 17 litres - so it's not a full tank you have used.

Still I normally get 140-150 miles between filling up and the light flashing but that's normally fairly fast motorway running.

Right, apologies for the delay, other things intruded.

I'm only getting a C42 error, which is the ignition switch signal anti theft thingy, so I can't see that being the problem (unless I'm wrong, lol).

So the next thing is to start having a bit of a delve I reckon.

Any connections I should make sure are clean as I'm intending to take the tank off and check everything to do with the fuel system and a couple of other jobs while I'm at it, like fit a manual switch for the fan.

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated.
