It just stopped.
« on: September 11, 2014, 23:06:22 »
So a few days back in the pouring rain my strom cut out.

No warning or anything, it was going then it just stopped going.

The abs light was on and the dash displayed "chec"

The dealer has no clue, Suzuki have no clue.

The reason it stopped was the ignition fuse blew. So the garage replaced it, got 40 miles before it blew and the bike blew another 3 in 300 yards.

We've ruled out the wire that chafes between seat and frame.

I'm at a loss, the dealer is at a loss and getting information from Suzuki is harder than getting blood from Bruce Forsyth.

Happened to mine after I washed it, cost a good few quid to get home that night. Had a local Suzuki shop dismantle it to check the loom in the hope it would be a warranty job but no joy. They put it back together and it no longer blew fuses ... I've put 2000 miles on it since through some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen and not missed a beat.

Did you check the wiring or the dealer? Just a thought.

I checked the parts I could get to by lifting the tank, had a poke around for loose/worn/waterlogged cables & connectors. I also disconnected and reconnected all the block connectors I could get to and it was still blowing fuses. They went further & still found nothing, yet upon re-assembly it no longer blew fuses and has continued to work perfectly since. maddening.

ACF-50 everything electrical - spray on the outer surfaces - grease inside connectors.

Totally brilliant stuff.

IMHO, of course.

If the problem was the ignition fuse blowing then the problem is likely to be in one of the circuits that uses the fuse and that the "+ve" side has the fault.

I'm sure the accessory socket uses the ignition fuse, as when I attached a lead to power an accessory, the solder spiked and went through the heat shrink and caused a short, which blew the fuse  :GRR:  which goes to show that the "ignition fuse" blowing doesn't mean it's an ignition fault.

I would also try and ACF50 any and every connection, and try and use a DVM to see when the +ve side of the fuse no longer has zero resistance.

Also, the aux connector is meant for charging a Sat Nav or phone with a maximum capacity of about 3 amps. Put a much bigger load on it and it will blow the ignition fuse.

that's a good point Greywolf.

Was the wiring harness original, or had it been chopped into?

It would be good to know if this fault potentially affects Glees' in heavy rain

OR just those running auxiliary equipment .

Matt, I presume by 'wire chafing between seat and frame' you mean THIS posted by Fatbelly a while back?

Even the mileage sounds so close to what he experienced...maybe have another look at that?

Had the bike dried out when the later fuses blew? Is it only in rain?

Try taking out the headlight fuse and running the bike in the (near) dark, let it idle (while the fuse lasts!) and mist-spray suspect bits with water, see if you can see any shorting...

Yes, that's the chafing I'm talking about.  The mileage has gone up considerably since I last updated it.

The fact that it happened in the rain the first time I feel was irrelevant and yes, the bike had dried when the other fuses blew. The blokes I've taken it to are pretty good so I would assume that if they said they checked the loom then it was thoroughly checked.

The bike only has a scottoiler v system on it and I don't think that's going to have made any difference.

How does the oiler get its power, or is it the vacuum type?

Update!

They're fairly sure it's the fuel pump.

Probably because they've run out of other things to test.

Don't pay them until it's properly fixed and ask for the old part on anything they replace.

They're doing it under warranty, I don't intend to pay for anything. Except maybe a beer for the blokes who fixed it.

I don't think it would produce the symptoms I've experienced though.

Spoke to the garage today, new fuel pump changed nothing.

They're going to put a new ECU on it to see if that fixes it.

Starting to think I might give up, tell them to keep it and buy a Veek.

I sort of thought the dealer was clueless. I couldn't see the fuel pump being a problem. It's likely there is an intermittent short in the wiring.
