Chain & Sprockets .. what to replace them with
« on: September 07, 2014, 21:25:46 »
So at 18k my front sprocket is showing more wear now, chain and rear sprocket look good but I intend to replace the lot together. I clean it every 800 miles or so, but I'm still quite impressed that the stock chain has made it this far and looks so good.

My choices seem to be DID x-ring bells and whistles type kit chain, another Suzuki set, or something else entirely.

Does anyone here have any strong opinions either way? I like to try different things and don't mind spending more for better kit so going.

DID X-Chain on mine, with JT sockets. Co-incidently, changed at 18001 miles, so you have another mile to go yet  :)

Good to know, my local shop is < 1 mile away.

I'm leaning to the DID chains, I think I saw a 25k warranty on one, but I guess sprockets would go well before that. Any reason for the JT sprockets?

Do people generally find a difference in drive chain noise between manufacturers also? Since fitting the airflow screen I can really hear it!

JT, Renthal, Sunstar, Supersprox or Talon sprockets. DID or EK chain everytime, avoid Renthal chains and only use rivet links :thumb:

If you're bothered about chain noise, you may want to get another stock front sprocket - the Suzuki item has a rubber 'ring' around it to dampen chain noise, whereas anything else (including the 15t and 17t options) will have no such thing and may be slightly noisier.

I notice mine at low speeds, especially turning left (the noise bounces off the road surface I guess) but it doesn't annoy me. I also haven't refitted the sprocket cover, which I suppose doesn't help haha

I change the chain and sprockets every 15k miles on the strom.

DID X-ring and JT Sprockets.

I'm lazy with chain maintenance and the scotoiler does the oiling,
I'm just looking at chains for the Super Sherpa and I look at the cheap ones and know they won't last.

Don't have a sprocket cover on my DR-Z either, had to remove it as the shifter can't adjust high enough for my off road boots with the cover on.

That's interesting, do you know if any third party ones do the same? I feel like trying different everything :)

None that I've seen I'm afraid. I do wonder if you could remove the rubber from a stock one, but I can't imagine it being easy to attach it to another sprocket.
