Cost of full Service - Bridge Motorcycles Exeter
« on: August 14, 2014, 11:36:49 »
Morning all!

Frustrating morning - went for a ride before work and the Glee died on me, thankfully at a petrol station as it was very wet. Seems like the alternator has died so Green Flag have taken it to Bridge in Exeter to be fixed - my wallet is hurting already in anticipation!

Just spoke with the woman in servicing at Bridge Motorcycles, and she just happened to mention that the next service (at 15,000 miles) is a full one with valve clearance checks, etc. Expects it to be £500 or so. That sounds a heck of a lot to me. What do people think? Can anyone in the Exeter area recommend somewhere else for servicing? I have always used Bridge as their customer service is so good, but feel that £500 for a service is taking the .....

Thoughts?

£500 would be excessive. Shop around.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

I don't know what their servicing is like but I bought mine 2nd hand from Speed Bikes opposite St David's station.
I got great service from them.
Say hi to Paul for me (the bloke who caught the train from Kent 3 mths ago and bought the 07 GT)

I was quoted approx £300 at my Suzuki dealer. But then he said, "Save your money, they never need doing at 14 thousand miles." So I did what he said.
Did everything else for £180.

I had mine done at an Independent for £180 - Whether he did it all I don't know, but I was happy.

Does the £500 include the repair of your charging system ? If so , sounds OK to me .

Your Glee could be suffering from a known issue. Make sure to check this so you don't get shafted for something that's a factory fault. There's some dodgy dealerships out there that will spin you any story to get your money even if they know it's a a known issue.

Get the 14k service done at a reputable independent, your warranty is still valid as long as the person doing the work is competent (whatever that means.) Have them use genuine Suzuki parts just in case, but I think this isn't even needed (don't quote me on that.)

You don't need to use genuine parts Juv, just parts of equal quality. I asked Suzuki GB myself and it was in their reply.

I have mine going in to Bridge for it's 7500 service tomorrow, £299. I nearly fell over when she told me.

The only thing about buying a new bike from Bridge is, if you then get it serviced by them, they will give you a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the bike.

I do think though this will be the last time I take it there. Will use a local place that's been recommended to me by a couple of people.

Try entering your details into this link.   You can pay for your next services monthly direct to Suzuki GB.

It might work out cheaper....go on try it! (2 OR 3year plan)

OR Suzuki dealers now do a menu 'Service lite' for £99 - you can then add on any one or all;-

plug change, brake fluid change, valve check, coolant change, oil upgrade,or throttle body balance-

*this is only for bikes over 2 years old

Where is it you've been recommended? Could do with an alternative....! Cheers

Been told by a couple of people about a place on Milber Ind Est, think the name is Brian Loram. I haven't used him yet so can't give first hand review.

As for the service at Bridge. Was told the service would take 4 hours, so wandered around the trading estate for three and a half hours before making my way back thinking that they may have got a move on and finished it.

How Wrong could I be. It took them a total of six hours to do the service.

After spending two and a half hours kicking my heals around the show room (there's only so many times you can look at bikes you can't afford), I was told is was ready. I paid the bill, jumped on the bike and rode home.
It wasn't till I was home did I give it the once over.

They had left a wire from the heated grips dangling down near the tank, knocked off two small rubber bump stops from under the fairing, and not even bothered to adjust the chain.

I wrote them a polite but unhappy email stating the problems, then adjusted my chain as it was slack. Monday morning I receive a phone call saying they were sorry and could they pick the bike up and put these right, which I agreed.

Got home from work today and they have returned the bike, still with the wire dangling down, at least they glued the rubber bits back.
Not a happy bunny.

My personal opinion of places like bridge for servicing is that they are for 2 kinds of people
1/ people who have plenty of money
2/ people who have very  little knowledge /experience of basic motorcycle servicing .
or both.
Heard loads of stories of poor servicing from there . Guess for basic stuff they use the work experience kids
Still ..like anything ..if you don't know any better  how would you know?

btw ..I recently subscribed to an american website for a complete service manual with photos in clear colour for only £15 ? ( lifetime ) haven't used it yet but looks fantastic for step by step crystal clear instructions for virtually any job you'd need to do. if anyone is interested it's at http://www.cyclepedia.com/manuals/online/cpp-200/

My full service on my vee cost me £220. Incudes checking and adjusting valve clearances etc,  air filter,  plugs and the usual bits.  The bloke even takes pics of each stage for u so u know he's actually done it.

He's an independent in Stockport,  but way cheaper than the main dealer (£340 starting price for the service).
