top box
« on: August 10, 2014, 12:59:09 »
been looking for a top box,not looking to pay too much for something I will use only a few times a year, and saw this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TAKE-COVER-51 ... ca8b,would this be OK for my 650 vstrom,or should I stop being tight and buy something with a bit more reputation

thanks for any advice

I bought the silver version, It's not as well made as the expensive stuff but it does exactly the same thing.
Mine has been subjected to bike drop (landing on the top box) and a fall by itself when off the bike. Other than a couple of scratches everything still works fine.

I would have been gutted if I had spent hundreds on a box and then dropped it....

To answer your initial question, yes I would recommend.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

thanks for the reply, looks like buying one, seems pointless paying a fortune for something that will spend most of its time in the shed

I bought one of these for the Vee. It arrived in a battered box but by some miracle wasn't damaged..

But...

The retard supplier has drilled a hole through the bottom of the box so that they can secure the mounting plate inside during transit

The hole is in such a position that it will always be on show and make the box no longer waterproof. Unbelievable  :text-datsphatyo:

Here is their response to me pointing that out..

Hello Thank you for your email. I am sorry your item is not as expected, I can confirm all of our top boxes have this, This is done so during transport the baseplate can stay in place with out moving around causing any damage. As this item is designed like this.We would not be able to arrange collection or refund your order. Would you like to return this for a refund of your original amount paid. Once I have your reply I will be able to help you further. Kind Regards Emma"

Then (and this is classic) 'Our design'

Hello Thank you for your email. I can confirm this is our design. We would happily be able to refund £10 of our order, however this is the most we can do as this item is as advertised and is correct. If I can be of any more help, please let me know. Kind Regards Emma"

That is incredible, and surely a bit illegal. They damage the item for transit? Have they never heard of packaging?

Some pics please, this is just too great to not find it's way to FB.

The first email is contradictory, stating they can't refund your order then saying they can. A moot point, as you're covered by the distance selling regulations anyway, giving you the right to change your mind within 7 days from the day after the goods arrive. If the goods are faulty (and a topbox designed to hold things and keep them dry, with a hole in the bottom, must surely be faulty!) the seller has to pay return postage costs too.

mine arrived today and hole drilled in bottom to secure the fixing plate, also noticed no fitting instructions, which even for the cheap price you would expect some instructions on how to fit it

How can these people say this is part of the design ? , as far as I know there is no top box anywhere on the market that has a pre-drilled hole in the bottom .
Even GIVI send some of there boxes with fixing plates inside that bounce around quite freely . I'd make the journey up to yarmouth and knock on their door .. :angry-tappingfoot:

Suppose you could block the hole with a rubber grommet and use it as a drain hole just in case fluids got into the box ..

If the seller is a business you can return under distance selling regulations.
