Rubber bushes in rear hub
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:24:35 »
Hi all, was giving the Vee a damn good clean last night & noticed that the rear sprocket sits a little bit loose in the hub ie there is movement, do the rubber bushes in the hub ever need changing or is this movement normal on these bikes ?? what are these rubber bush things actually called.

ps forgot to say the sprocket nuts are tight !

Thanks in advance Lardy boy

http://www.v-strom.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=9474 Cush Drive Rubbers, it looks like the opinion is that they can be shimmed.

These are called cush drive rubbers. It is usual to have a small amount of play. If they did require changing I would replace rather than shim.

Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

New cush rubbers hold the sprocket carrier in place nicely. If the thing falls out by itself, even if the wheel is held on a horizontal plane with the sprocket down, it's time the replace or shim the cush rubbers. They wear quickly on the 1000 and slowly on the 650.

You really need to find if it's the cush drive rubbers wearing or the sprocket carrier bearing. If the rubbers are worn you will feel movement back and forth in the direction of the bike. If the carrier bearing is worn you will be able to rock the whole sprocket and carrier from side to side across the bike, if that makes sense. Once you work out what needs repalcing you can go ahead and get the bits.

Keeping the cush rubbers tight will lengthen the life of the bearing. Allow them to get worn so the carrier can rock and the bearing will go in a hurry. A double row bearing would be a better design.

Thank you all, stripped it down on Saturday & there was indeed play in the rubbers, to get up & running for Sunday I packed the rubbers with 2" x 1" rubber pieces from an old innertube & bingo no play. Bearings all OK.

Cheers blokes lardy boy.
