Customising
« on: July 25, 2014, 14:48:32 »
An appeal for thoughts and pictures if any.

I currently run a 04 DL650, it owes me nothing and has provided great service, however I will be looking at changing soon.

My dilema is this. Should I sell it and make a small amount or customise it and give it a revamp so providing more service.

When I say customise, I don't intend to rake out the forks and turn it into some awful Peter Fonda/Jack Nicholson travesty, but perhaps strip back all the plastic, cut off all the extra weight and generally make it leaner. Maybe a round headlight and some new clocks even spoked wheels.

Just a design exercise at present, so if any Strommers out there have done the same let me know. Pictures always welcome to aid inspiration.

Regards DWC

Plenty of 'thinstrom's on VSRI and ADVrider :)

But you'll lose any remaining 'value' in the bike when the time comes to move on.

Most thinstrommers do it to improved the off-tarmac manners.

Nothing to stop you stripping it down and cleaning it all up, ah la Juvecu :)

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

There's a link in my signature to what I did. My bike has no real resale value because of the mileage being over 105k. I spent some money to clean it up well and I'll just keep using it, it's fine for what I need. It owes me nothing and I save a bunch by not buying a new bike that I really don't need.

Make a great trail bike, only need a cheap Dolley to pull it and you have a great extra hobby that will rock.sell what you take off which will be of value for buying tyres etc it will not cost you any more money.

I've got an 04 DL650 too. And mine doesn't owe me anything either.

But you don't need to "dick with it", just keep it as is. There's nothing worng with it and it does what it says on the tin. Just go ride it.

As I thought varying views on the subject. I've looked at the thin strom projects but that is not how I envision my customising.

The pictures provided, well I'm afraid hell would have to freez over before I rode a creation like that. I would have to invest in a new wardrobe of pirate like clothes. That said it might float some boats!

In all probability it will remain the same, unless I find something that sparks my imagination. The resale value is not an issue. I've never yet bought an item with this in mind, unles it was for investment puposes. I like to use my gear.
