Right Hand Turns!?!
« on: June 13, 2014, 19:41:28 »
Hi All,

Just a quick one.

I have found when I turn right out of roads/junctions I.e. from a standstill, if I gas a little hard the back slides out to straighten up with the bike.

I'm not sure if I am still getting used to the bike, although I have done 800 miles or so on her now or I am just being a bit throttle happy, although I don't think I am being excessive with it.

I am on Roadpilot 3's with plenty of tread so no issued with tyres.

Just wondered if anyone else experiences this?
If you nicked my GSX-R Thou, I want it back!!!

When turning right you are against camber of road, less tyre grip but turning left you are with camber of road, more tyre grip. Hope that makes sense.

its usually a 90 degree turn across traffic ,, the tendency is to do it too quickly.. you wouldn't increase speed and revs in any other tight corner

Never experienced this. I wouldn't have even thought the 650 could do that with good tyres on a dry road.

I'm with Jacko, this puzzles me. I sometimes ride very aggressively and I don't think I've ever experienced this on either of my bikes. Oil leaking onto one side of the tyre?

The pilot 3s are a grippy tyre unless they are over or under inflated . Check your pressures and then try a more conservative right turn .  :thumb:

Less throttle, more clutch slipping :thumb:

Some people are more comfortable turning one way than the other, you could be trying to get it done too quickly

Slip the clutch on low speed turns. V-twin plus low speed throttle response makes low speed control difficult without slipping the clutch. I never had low speed handling issues on an IL4, it's unique to twins/thumpers I think.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Nail the throttle, and accelerate away sideways - helps prevent tailgaters

I have had this going both right and left, its only a very minor slide but its normally as I am a bit keen with the throttle with the bike still leaning for the turn.

lol this has turned into quite a funny thread.

Juv - definitely not oil
kwackboy - thank for this, it could possibly add to it, I do run them on the harder side due to lots of 2 up riding
mjc506 - love it, maybe I'll give it a try!
Sharpy - I think I am probably a bit lent over as well, maybe this adds

It's probably still me getting used to the bike to a certain extent and the different limitations.

I am just about getting used to not really revving it in first gear, about 6,000 then shift up and it takes off like a rocket!  :auto-dirtbike:

That's probably a wee bit much for a right-hand turn from a standstill  :neen:

In normal commute style riding on anything that's not a dual carriage way I don't get to 6000 rpm in any of the gears unless I feel spirited/go for a quick overtake. If you're setting of at that kind of rpm you're arguably doing it completely wrong. I hardly lift the revs past tick over before I let the clutch bite and I seldom slip the clutch unless I'm crawling along very slowly. One really doesn't need to slip the clutch on a Strom as much as some would have you think (usually they are the ones that need the TPS properly adjusted so the throttle isn't like an On/Off switch at low RPM.)
