Brake pads
« on: March 24, 2014, 07:14:31 »
I need to replace my front brake pads, and thought I might as well do the back as well while I'm at it as they aren't too far away from the end of their life. Question is, which pads should I go for? By the way, I'm completely clueless about these things, and had to google the word 'sintered' whilst searching for pads and I'm still not sure I really understand what the advantage is!

First option at £69.99 are EBC Sintered pads:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-DL650-V-Strom-2004-2013-Set-of-EBC-Sintered-HH-Front-Rear-Brake-Pads-/171198101663?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item27dc33b89f
Are they worth the extra money?

Next, at £54.99 are the standard EBC pads:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-DL650-V-Strom-2004-2013-Set-of-EBC-Front-Rear-Brake-Pads-/121238172635?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item1c3a5bb3db

Finally are the super-cheap £39.99 Goldfren sintered pads:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-DL-650-K4-K5-K6-V-Strom-04-06-Goldfren-Sintered-Front-Rear-Brake-Pad-Set-/140666782453?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item20c064c2f5
When it comes to brakes, I don't really want to be a cheapskate, but then again, if these are any good it's quite a saving over the EBC pads!

many love sintered- I won't use them.

I didn't notice any difference in performance and the EBC ones I had, scored my discs so bad I now go through a set of pads in 6k miles- I need new disks very soon.  :bawl:

I use EBC GG front and back, But have a set of Ferodo organic to go on the front soon.
Ferodo fitted to the mrs bike and the little thing feels much better now.

I use EBC HH and they always give me better feel than standard ones but are not as expensive as the sintered. I don't know what that means too ;)

I missed those on my first search of ebay!

I still haven´t changed mines, but as far as I understood, if you buy EBC pads, you get the pads only, no backing plates nor pillows.
I'm too thinking of getting EBC HH when the time comes, but will be looking at backing plates. If they stay clean and shiny till then, I'll probably take a shot with EBC HH.

"Sintering" relates to the manufacturing process of the pad material. The other common ones seen are described as "organic". Both have pros and cons in how they perform and last. Sintered pads tend to be more expensive and as they tend to be harder some people find they give the discs are harder time, wearing them out prematurely. The key thing is to buy a recognised brand, (EBC, Brembo, Bendix, genuine Suzuki etc.)and probably based on feedback from forums like this and avoid the cheap obscure branded ones found on the internet, some of which may turn out to be very poor. Would also suggest giving the calipers (pistons and seals) and slider pins and thorough clean and check over at the same time and if the brake fluid hasn't been changed in the last 3 years, changing it as well.

Bosnjo - the backing plates can be taken off of the old pads. I'm not sure what pillows are you referring to.

JRS81 - it may be good idea to change your brake lines too. They are not that expensive (wezmoto). I put them on on my sv650 and I definitely had better feel

I wouldn't use Ferodo, I put some on my wee and they lasted 5 minutes (slight exaggeration). EBC HH last a decent amount of time and give good braking. I tried EBC GG on the rear but was not impressed and went to HH on the rear too. Some people think HH on the rear makes the braking too strong for controlled use, but I never found that myself. The backing plates can be re-used over and over, I never replaced mine in 60k miles.

Backing plates? I've got some EBC brake pads in the shed, they have the backing plates attached.

No good without them. You all must be on about something else.

He's on about the thin metal shims that clip onto the back of the pads.

They used to be called anti squeal shims iirc.

Well, I've ordered a full set of EBC pads as per Kam's recommendation, and since I'm putting the bike in for a service in the next couple of weeks I'll just hand them over with the bike and let the garage worry about backing plates/anti squeal shims!

Thanks for the help everyone  :)

I'm not sure what pillows are you referring to.
Between pads and backing plates (or shims), there is one more shim/plate, white, soft one. I'm not sure what are they for, maybe heat transfer or anti-squeal, I don't know. I've serviced my calipers few weeks ago and really can't remember if those soft white shims were just on rear pads or both rear and front.
I was just saying that when you buy Suzuki pads, you get all of it together. EBC's are pads only.
Anyway, when time comes to change mines, I'll probably go for EBC HH as I hope shims will be OK at that point to reuse them.

Ahh, so not backing plates then. I was right, you were on about something else.

I've never had sliding callipers before, didn't know they had the shims.

Yeah, took the term from something else, obviously... Sorry... English is not my mother tongue nor I've ever lived in english speaking country, so, from time to time I make these mistakes.
But I'm trying hard... :chores-chopwood:

So now it's going to be my fault if you won't like the feel of those pads? I hope you'll like them ;)

Bosnjo, you've got me intrigued. Can't see anything but standard type pads and shims on the fiche page. Can you point the soft white ones out on this page (or wherever you can see them)
