Tim

Hope all goes well with the fueling and will be interested to see the outcome.

I nipped to the dealers this morning and paid for mine and all ready for delivery. Just waiting for my free centre stand and heated grips, not to mention the knuckle guards, sump guard and side luggage I have ordered. Oh and the graffics kit.

 :)

Does the owners manual give a bit more info about the servicing regime, I.e. when the valves need doing?
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Valves inspected every 15000 miles (24000 km). The schedule in my manual is actually an addenda sheet, and based on a 7500 mile interval, loads better than the 4000 on the GSX1250FA. I'll scan the page and post it.

Have them check the throttle position sensor (TPS) when you take it in for the fuel tweak. If this is off you can also get the on off type of feel at small throttle openings, I had this issue on my Wee.

Pic and service schedule as promised!

Pic was taken last night in failing light at Shineybikesyndrome, after a deep clean and ACF50 blast. Thanks Nigel for your excellent service, as usual! He has seen a lot of bikes, and I hope I can say he was pretty impressed. We discussed a bunch of possible mods so maybe.....

Anyway, rode from Bristol to Newbury and back, weather was great until it got dark when the wind picked up, and VStrom proved a bit wriggly in a cross wind! Otherwise, that A4 is a great road!

More soon,

Tim

Interestingly the oil filter is replace every 15k. So it seems they've done some work on the filters as well as the 'engineering work' they've done to the engine to make the oil last twice as long.

Thanks for the pic, I may 'retro fit' that schedule to my 2012 650. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if that schedule works just fine on an old Wee too :)

7500 miles between oil changes on an engine that includes the transmission is a bit much for my taste. There is too much shearing of molecules. 5000 miles on synthetic is more like it for me. If the spark plugs are conventional, that interval is more like it. If they are iridium, it's still shorter than it need be. Four years on hoses is still nuts.

Mine is sitting in my garage as not registered till Saturday. But I have fitted the Sump guard and wired the Garmin Sat Nav this morning. I have taken a supply from the rear of the power socket on the dash display which leaves the socket clear. I have also adapted the Givi top plate from my DL650 to fit the DL1000 rack. But now waiting for the rest of my accessories.

Couple more comments, having managed to get through a couple of tankfuls now, the 'Range Remaining' works really well, and I found having Trip 1 running as well gives a great indication of range since fill-up as well as range remaining at the same time. The display is easy to use, easy to read, easy to adjust the brightness and so on. Tank range is easily good for 200 miles, although that is while running in, and without the centre stand, so not sure if I will be able to get more fuel in when the bike is vertical rather than tipped over on the side stand. I don't like sitting astride a bike while filling, having seen someone drop the nozzle, spraying petrol all over his legs and the bike! And I didn't run the tank out to see how accurate the gauges are at the finish!

turbulence around the screen is OK; moving the screen to its 3 different positions changes things, from smoothish but in-the-face, to reduced force but blustery when fully forward. This will vary obviously with speed and your height, but it is way less than the 650 I rode last year, which I found completely beyond a joke! When I have the touring screen fitted, Hopefully things will be even better, not that they are bad now.

Main-Dip switch is a little irritating; like the indicator switch, they do feel very wimpy under gloves, and I hope Suzuki can look at this. The points of contact for the rider need to match in 'feel', and these switches are out of kilter with the rest of the bike, which otherwise is very solid.

The ride is proving very surefooted, although I am not pushing things much! I am not some invited journo who can trash other peoples bikes with impunity ... I also want to get this slight glitch in the fuelling sorted out, which is being a bit of a trial especially commuting in Bristol traffic!  It is definitely there, standing still and gently reducing the revs is fine until 2100 revs is reached, and then with barely any more movement of the twist grip, the revs drop instantly to around 1000. And of course with all that engine breaking, this can be quite exciting!!  But as I mentioned before, I will get this sorted. And thanks Juvecu for the pointer ref the sensor unit, definitely mention that to the service blokes.

Right, more soon, hoping to have the accessories all fitted shortly.

Many thanks for information and I cannot wait till Saturday. I have now fitted the Givi top box, Knuckle guards, Sat Nav and centre stand. Graffics kit will be fitted by the dealer at the first service.
I will have two to ride from Saturday as I will be putting a few miles on the dealer demonstrator for them.

The fuelling anomaly is odd, they got the Glee spot on so they can do it.

Seems like the Danish really like it, but also they have spotted some fuelling issues and a bit of sensitivity in a cross wind. Looks like I am at least consistent with them!!

I wouldn't call that a fueling issue. About 2500rpm is a practical minimum for a moving V-Strom. Below that, start using the clutch to control speed and keep the revs up.

I beg to differ. This happens when the bike is under load or not. Slowly drop the rev, in neutral, and as the needle passes 2100 or thereabouts, it drops, instantly, to 1100 or thereabouts. It runs happily either side, just not between.

Whatever the cause, it is not a very pleasant, especially as when trickling through traffic, in 1st gear, that is exactly where the engine will be revving. It reminds me of the blip switch on World War 1 rotary engines.

Now, call me picky, but I do not intend to put this down to 'character', and just 'get used to it' . And I am certainly not slipping the clutch unless I really need to!! I'll let you know how Frasers get on with sorting it out. They did a very similar 'sort' on the FA, I know straight fours are different, jeez, I've had a few, as well as V-twins and others, and this is by far the worst, in this respect. At the moment. I am fully confident it will be sorted!!

The engine should never be running with a load under 2500rpm. To do so is lugging the engine.

GW is right, it depends on the bike, but the old DL1000's torque curve dropped off completely below 2.5k revs and the new one isn't going to be that much different. Even on my old wee I had to get use to keeping some revs on the engine and slipping the clutch on slow turns like turning into a road on the right which was a completely new thing for me having come for IL4 bikes.

Now there may also be a fueling issue at low revs that exacerbates the issue, but if not get ready to start slipping the clutch in those situations.
