FI Fault 42 ?
« on: February 09, 2014, 17:04:13 »
Good afternoon strom people,

My DL1000 (2008) has developed a problem, on initial start up the light on the dash flashes, the FI is on display and the bike will turn over but won't start  :angry-tappingfoot:

I have to turn the ignition on and off a few times to get the bike to normal mode before it'll start.

can anyone help, before I go to the dealer and get ripped off.

PS I've had it in dealer mode and get the Fault Code 00 and have changed the generator last month.

Any helpful advice would be great :ty:

Code C-00 is no fault found-

anything other than c-00 will be an actual fault- A dealer will be able to read the logged previous fault codes but the normal 'dealer mode' will only display current fault.
(I bought a dealer plug with just enough cable to put the switch under the black plastic bit by my left leg, so if I get a fault come up, I can pull over and flick the switch, get the code without turning the engine off and losing the code.)

Leave it in 'dealer mode' and ride it- (you only lose the clock) and if you get the issue it'll tell you the code, so remember it when it comes up.

If it's an intermittent fault it's most likely sensor issue or Suzuki's crap electrical system corrosion.

there are a fair few faults that will cause the FI to come on and stop the engine from starting, but too many options to start taking wild guesses at without a definitive fault code - Sorry

Fault codes are-

C00 No error
C11 Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) - 1000 Only
C12 Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS)
C13 Intake Air Pressure Sensor (IAPS)
C14 Throttle Position Sensor
C15 Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (ECTS)
C17 Intake Air Pressure Sensor (IAPS) - 07 & Up 650 Only
C21 Intake Air Temp. Sensor (IATS)
C22 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor (APS) - 1000 Only
C23 Tip Over Sensor (TOS)
C24 Ignition Signal #1 (Front Coil)
C25 Ignition Signal #2 (Rear Coil)
C28 Secondary Throttle Valve Actuator (STVA)
C29 Secondary Throttle Position Sensor (STPS)
C31 Gear Position Sensor (GPS)
C32 Injector Signal #1 ( Front)
C33 Injector Signal #2 (Rear)
C40 ISC Valve - 07 & Up 650 Only
C41 Fuel Pump Control System (Fuel Pump Relay)
C42 Ignition Switch Signal (Anti-Theft)
C44 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
C49 PAIR Control Solenoid Valve

If you can get a code it'll give us a clue what you're dealing with

A dealer can read a past code with an SDS system. A dealer mode jumper has to be in place when the fault is active to display a code. The suggestion to leave the bike in dealer mode until you get a code is a good one.

Just found the code in Dealer Mode:

 C 42 - Ignition Switch ( anti theft)

WTF do I do now?

 :angry-tappingfoot:    :wtf:

The usual cause is an ignition switch contact or connector in the switch or loom that is corroded or not making good contact. There is a resistor in the unit that the ECM needs to read. If there is too much of a voltage drop due to a marginal connection or contact, the ECM reads the resistor value as too high and throws a C42. If the resistor is bypassed by hot wiring the bike, the ECM reads the resistance as too low with the same result.

I second the above ... Suzuki electrics corrode very easily ..

There's a green connector behind the radiator. I had this issue last year(year before? I can't remember) and cleaning this connector sorted it. Apparently, copper oxide doesn't conduct as well as copper :)

While you're in there, disconnect, clean and ACF50 all those connectors back there.

Quick Update -

The fault code is caused by a u/s ignition barrel , looks like I'll be stripping her down soon and giving the slots a sanding as per details on stromtroopers forum. Thanks all.
