Servicing schedule
« on: October 18, 2013, 11:59:57 »
I've been worrying about the strom missing its service schedule - so finally last night got round to doing the 7000 mile service, but the clocks are showing 8126

I've been worried about this as it ifar over the mileage - but actually, looking in the records - I don't think it is.

The service book shows (and the receipts are present) that my bike has the following service history:

The first owner registered the bike on 04/03/2011
It had already had its PDI check on 23/2/11
It then had its 1st service at 696 miles (bit late?) by the supplying dealer on 22/4/11
it then hit its 12 month limit, so got a 2nd service at 3276 miles by another Suzuki dealer on 20/4/12
Again it hit the 12month limit and got a 3rd service at 4914 miles by the Suzuki dealer on 27/4/13

I bought the bike in July with 5200 on the clock - a couple trips to Scotland and one to the Alps have seen me take it over 8000 miles so I was panicking - but actually, its less that 3500 since its last service - so I should have waited until 8400 (OK, only a couple of hundred early) should I?

which is right? is it up-to-date? - it feels fairly well serviced - but I was worrying that it was over 7000.

I did the 7000 mile service schedule of plugs, oil & oil filter and also replaced the air filter rather than "inspecting" (what's the point!) - was this correct?

any thoughts?

It's scheduled mileage is 7,500, not 7,000. But you're right anyway, nothing to worry about, it's been over-serviced if anything.

With a service history as sporadic as that, it'll pack up any day now. I'd scrap it :-)

ha ha - yes - so many oil changes it'll have wasted away!

I just wrote what I did in the service manual - do others do that? I've done the same for my ZX6R for the past 10 years too!

Couple of points though - the plugs were "Denso"  - I was expecting them to be NGK for some reason - are the denso's OE?

also - the sump plug has a magnet - usually aftermarket I thought, perhaps specified by the previous owner - or is it OE also?

Yes I write what I do in the service book , I've done this for years and it pays off when you come to sell it .

Mine was serviced on the 12 month limit rather than the 3500 miles and went that way for 8 years. But this year I really did need two services, with one on time and one on distance.

You have nothing to worry about.

My OE plugs were Denso, that or local bike vandals have gone advanced.

Mine hasn't been near a dealer since 600 miles. I keep receipts, photograph the mileage display with old filters beside it and write in the book. Probably a better body of evidence than a dealer stamp dated after the pubs open on a Friday afternoon.

took it out for a quick spin today to make sure it was running well - new oil has quietened it down a little - but the surprise is the K&N filter and the noise it makes when you open the throttle wide - sounds great!! - lovely induction noise - think I'll get one for the ZX6 too.

the bike felt a bit sharper too - just a bit more 'snap' when you open the throttle - probably just in my head and the effect of the enhanced induction noise - but I'll take it anyway!

Might be the freer flowing air filter...

making the noise, yes.

can't imagine it makes a crap of difference to power - at least not without an exhaust and some fuel mapping.

Maybe not from a brand new and clean OE filter. ;)

oh I see - you mean the difference in simply having a clean filter - K&N or not?

yes - could be - certainly, the 'clean' K&N would flow a fair bit easier than the (surprisingly) manky OE thing that came out!

Exactly, a new K&N over an old OEM. We got there in the end.

Worth a try, the induction note on my zx6 is addictive, I have a Micron can that I use for trackdays, it has a freer flow at high revs but bogs down low in the rev range, I guess it's a trade off. I use the standard can on the road as it runs better low down, I wouldn't want to lose that with a K&N filter in the same way I do with the track can.

ha ha - not sure about the versus!

Jacko - on my ZX6 I have a blue-flame exhaust can - its a road legal unit with twin outlet, I leave the baffle in the main outlet and the end cap in the lower outlet - this is the road legal status.
I have tried it with the main baffle out - very loud and fluffy running at the low revs
With the main baffle in and the lower cap out - slight increase in noise - generally runs OK.

With the baffles in place it is great - slightly louder than stock, same running, save a TON of weight (well,  a good few KGs anyway)

But yes - the induction howl is really something on those bikes.

On the subject of air filters - I mentioned that the OE one was decidedly filthy looking and I doubt that the previous owner (or myself) have exactly taken the bike to any particularly challenging environments. Yet I was glad I had already bought a replacement at just 8000 miles.

on the other hand, my BMW 530d has just turned 31,000 miles, it is showing "4000 miles to service" (it was last serviced at 14,000 so 21,000 miles between services!!!) and it is still on its original air filter! - I'm not even sure if it will get changed at this next service either!

I know cars manufacturers are under pressure to extend service intervals for the fleet market - but this is ridiculous surely!?!? Because it came with the "service pack" (pre-paid 5yrs servicing - a bargain to specify when new) they won't even take it early - if the computer says 'no' - it ain't getting serviced!
