removing the tank
« on: October 17, 2013, 14:20:13 »
do you have to drain the tank before removing it? - I was assuming it would have some sort of stop valve, but the first video I have come across on youtube claims youhave to drain the tank entirely before progressing - is this true?

Not true. Less weight makes the job easier but the only fuel that comes out is what is in the hose. A rag under the junction when separating takes care of that easily.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

That's great thank you. That's more what I was expecting.

I've ran the tank down. 200 miles since last fuel so I reckon only 5ltrs (5kg?) of fuel left. Should be OK.

+1 for what Greywolf said. This is not a gravity feed system and when you uncouple the fuel pipe you should get no more than a dribble from tyhe pipe. Wrap some cloth round the end and prop it out of the way. You stand more chance of contaminating the fuel by draining it and then pouring it back in than leaving it where it is.

It may weigh a little more but the tank is the best place to keep your fuel. leave it there and get someone to lend a hand if its too heavy.
