Genuine Suzuki engine / crash bars
« on: September 23, 2013, 14:10:35 »
OK. So I've gone and ordered some genuine Suzuki crash / engine bars for my wee. Question is - has anyone fitted them and if so, how did you go about it?

I've also ordered the Alu sump guard thing to go with the bars, in not as worried about fitting it as the main worry I have on the engine bars is the removal and refitting of the engine mount bolt ( if that's what is needed)

Thanks for any tips - photos get even bigger thanks!!

Don't worry too much about the Engine Mounting bolts, just do one side at a time, then the engine is always held in place. There's nothing to it really. I don't like to touch my bike myself, but fitting bars was something I did do.

Thanks Martin - appreciate the reply.

I guess my main worry is the central bolt - other brand crash bars use the ends of the 'V' bracket - but the genuine Suzuki ones use the actual main bolt in the middle of the 'V' bracket - the one that goes through the engine (hard to describe in words!)

I'm "reasonably"  useful with the spanners so should be OK - but was wondering about securing the engine and any other tips folks might have!

OK, best to wait for someone else to comment as mine are Givi bars that only use the ends of the Vee shape mounts. I cannot imagine they will say any different though.

It was the givi ones I initially fancied, but wanted the sump guard too and the genuine Suzuki items worked out the best value proposition.

Thanks again.

Don't worry - the engine is held at three points, the main one is the one you're looking at, and there's two smaller ones at the rear. Do one bolt at a time, and there'll be no problems.

In fact, when rebuilding mine, I removed all three bolts, and the engine still wouldn't budge - it's held tight by compression bolts in the main and bottom-rear mountings.

I switched from OEM to Givi bars and did a step-by-step guide for another member cgozee who bought my OEM ones off me. Pretty sure I still have it on my home PC, will check when I get home again and drop you a PM if I find it.

Did your OEM bars come with the long engine bolt, as the existing one cannot be reused?

As per the other respondents the weight of the engine is not carried directly by this bolt so it can be removed and replaced with ease, once you've loosened the cheesy Suzuki nut that is!  :thumb:

Thanks for all the responses!

I've not actually received them yet - I've ordered them from a Suzuki dealer so hoping they come as a kit to use - including bolts!

if you could find the guide that would be fantastic!

thanks

Bars come with a longer bolt. You can remove the centre bolt from the engine to fit the new one with no issues at all.

Suzuki doesn't make crash bars. They usually get them from SW-Motech and put them in Suzuki boxes but some models and countries may vary.

Those are the old style SW Motech crash bars. The "genuine" Suzuki bash plates are also made by SW Motech.

They arrived yesterday!

Both the bars and the sump guard thing so that should keep me busy for a while.

I'm a tiny bit annoyed that I didn't research the options a bit better as the newer sw motech bars look better and also attach to the "genuine" sump guard. But anyway, the old style was much better priced and I didn't really want to spend any more than the £250 I cost for them l as it was.

I have to say though, unboxing and reading the instructions (I use that term loosely) and the parts - they came with full fitting kit/ bolts etc btw - I'm not worried about fitting the bars at all but the part I thought would be easy - the sump guard - is much more complex than I was expecting!

I'm also not sure if I should thread lock the bolts for the bars and engine bolts. I guess I will see when I remove the originals eh

and I was right...

fitted the crash-bars - they look great and were a doddle to fit! - even taking my time - really pleased.

but the sub-frame that needs mounting to hold the sump guard - it needs to attach to the two bolts that hold the side stand to the frame - and could I get them off??? - no way! - they are solid!

Loctited on I would imagine - with very strong stuff. Two bolts with 17mm heads, couldn't shift them with either the ring spanned or the socket set I had - need something longer to try and 'break' them - and a better working position too.

Not sure what to do now - might need to seek some help!

Thread locker is defeated by heat.

A heat gun covers a lot of area. A small propane torch or even a soldering iron may work better. You want to limit the heat to the bolt as much as possible.

oh OK - isn't it a bit dangerous to use a naked flame?

Only if you put it where it doesn't belong. A heat gun covers a wide area, has to be held longer to free thread locker, can melt plastic and damage paint.
