Interesting article re 'running in'
« on: August 28, 2013, 17:50:38 »
Interesting article I found reference running or breaking your new bike engine. Relevant to modern engines, not old uns. The well known author wrote for the independent newspaper before his untimely death earlier in the year. He is a V-Strom fan and seems to talk a lot of sense!
It's a lengthy but thorough piece which backs up many theories that are not strictly in line with the manual. Most of the info comes via the boffins at Castrol themselves!

As I mentioned in another thread, it really is old thinking. I ought to know. I'm really old.  :old:
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

It's the most sensible article of the type I've read, at least they aren't trying to sell oil or make a race motor. When do they do part 2 where they run in the gearbox and bed-in tyres and brakes though?

Chances are you won't own the bike when anything resulting from your running in rears it's ugly head. It's no big deal, just the second favourite topic after oil on some websites!

The state of the micro-structure on my bores bores me.

In a similar, not related and totally different vein, am I better inflating my tyres with nitrogen? I believe that NASA use it in some of their extra terrestrial vehicles and I would imagine it would be beneficial in my Vstrom. I tried it in the tyres on my wife's shopping trolley and noticed an improvement in down hill muddy sections when fully loaded with chocolate. I think this could make for an interesting thread as well...

It certainly makes good fodder for the technically minded but knowing all that certainly won't get you a girlfriend!!

It worked for one bloke, but it is a rare occurrence.

Your tyres already have 78% nitrogen in them, what benefit are you expecting to get from another 22%? Where are you going to get a foot pump that's smart enough to filter the other gases out?

Along the same trend:

Hookie, I didn't expect this to be a relevant thread for you when I saw you had a DL1000. Then I saw you're showing 0 miles! Haven't you run it in yet? Maybe this thread will be useful after all!!
