Top Engine Mounting Bolt - Removal Advice
« on: August 16, 2013, 17:57:22 »
Hello All,

I have a set of engine crash bars that are looking very crappy (due to rust damage). I would dearly love to be able to remove these and effect repairs. It looks like the major anchorpoint is sitting inside the top engine mounting bolt and therefore would need to be removed in order to get the bars off.

My question is this. I have looked at the schematic on the service manual and it seems to suggest that the engine is held in with three of these long bolts, one at the top and two towards the bottom of the engine. Is it possible to release the top mounting bolt and let the bottom two take the engine weight without the whole thing starting to drop out of alignment?

I might decide to simply put the top mounting bolt back on and torque up while the crash bars are begin repaired, just in case I need to ride the bike in the meantime.

These look like original factory crash bars, the bike is a GT if that makes any difference.

The engine is held in place by a casting projection on the right and an adjuster on the left. The bolt in question can be removed without problems as long as the bike isn't ridden with it out.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

this is an interesting post to me as I quite fancy fitting the genuine Suzuki bars as they are very well priced - please do let us know how you get on?

I removed my genuine Suzuki crashbars for re-powdercoating - as GW said you can remove.the top bolt with no issues (just don't ride without putting it back).

You can see the projection on the right hanger #4 and the adjuster #7 on the left hanger.
