Suzuki tool kit on vee
« on: August 07, 2013, 01:54:55 »
Hi all
Was just having a general tinker with my vee this afternoon.
I decided to have a look in the tool kit that comes with the bike. Got all the spanners and stuff out
started to see which spanner did what on different parts. Ie if need in emergency, found one that I could use to remove rear wheel.
But could not find anything that would remove front axle.
Dose anyone know if I am missing the large allen key or Suzuki thought they would have a laugh and miss a few important bits you might need in a emergency!

In any case looks like a trip to the tool shop for me. Bet I come away with a lot more than a large allen key , will just need to find a way to sneak the extra really really important tools passed me misses!
When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

There is no front axle tool in the toolkit. You have to get your own.

12mm allen key I think?

Think of it as an investment - if you have al the tools you'll be able to save money on servicing costs :)

An alternative is a car drain plug remover - these often come in a double ended 14 / 18 mm or similar and you use an open ended spanner on the other end. I used one for chain adjustment (eccentrics) on my Tiger.

Yep, 12mm Allen for the front axle, swingarm is 19mm. I bought an Allen socket set only to realise later on that the set didn't go up to 19mm. I just bought the 19mm separately. Very handy to have a whole set, use it a lot more than I thought I would, I won't like L shaped Allen keys at all.

You don't need to carry the 19mm for the swingarm :) I probably won't even carry the 12mm. Just find a 12mm nut and a 12mm (head size) bolt. Screw them together, stick it in the axle and turn it with a 12mm spanner/socket/whatever you have handy.

650s need a 12mm front axle key while 1000s need a 19mm.

Tool kit is very poor quality. Best buy suitable sized spanners and a quality allen key set and leave the originals unused in their little bag. ( that'll look good when you sell it)
The front axle on my wee was so tight I needed an extension bar on a socket wrench to undo it. Nothing in the tool kit comes anywhere near what is needed.
and
You will need a torque wrench when you tighten it after.
Halfrauds do one with different sizes on the same lump and it was cheaper than what I bought on-line.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

.

Do you supersize your burgers and let men at the side of the road wash your windscreen when they suggest it too?

There is no real need to torque the axle, it's clamped after you stop turning. The torque setting is there is stop the stealers using a ten foot bar or leaving it halt undone, keep Halfrauds in business and discourage you from not using Suzuki brand air in the tyres. Just turn until the thread bottoms and do up the clamping bolts as tight as the supplied (shortish) open end will allow.

The OEM tool kit seems fine to me, I've had the wheels off using it and the 12mm allen bit you have to buy  :angry-tappingfoot: . If you are going to rebuild the engine sure you want a set of workaday tools in the garage, but only Ural owners have to carry theirs round. :sarc:

I did a ride round the Baltic on the XT and used every single patch in a full puncture repair kit. I also had to drop the oil and do sundry other bits of bodging to keep it roadworthy after the usual tree and gravel related wear and tear. The Yamaha tool kit was very similar to the Suzuki one, nice and light, short spanners in the just the right sizes etc. Worked fine. Only tip as noted above is to try them at home, going round with sockets, extension bar and copper slip to find out where the boys in Japan got over excited with the air gun can make life easier.

yes I can't ague with any of that but I still feel it will not be possible to undo a factory or workshop fitted wheel spindle nut without bar so long it will not fit an under saddle  toolkit.
But I still think Suzuki should supply one.
Cost warning ...  bought through a dealer the official tool is more than three times the Halfrauds price.

Cheers for the replies chaps, looks like a trip to machine mart, halfords, toolstation and screwfix.
Not that I need to go to all of them. Just want to get my own back on the misses, see how she likes to get dragged round all the tool shops then back to the first shop we went in for the allen key  :lala:

Buy three marginally different ones from three different shops , go home, undo a couple of random fasteners then take two back the week after. You should also remember that you get to have a five quid coffee on each trip.  :)

My toolkit has a chrome tube (flattened at one end) that can be used to extend the allen key handle for more leverage.

I'd say you'd need a bit more than that for a front axle.
