Help pls
« on: July 26, 2013, 18:24:17 »
took my bike to drs in Hull, they reset the cpu with a yoshi and put it on a dynometer for me. they said it was running rich at the topend of the revs but they weren't  sure why. anyone else had this problem? and what was the cause?

k7 DL1000 gt standard. was running OK although a little slappy at low speeds, then after travelling along m62 got into Hull and it cut out at round - a - bout, so had it checked. was zero'ed on a yoshi then put on the dynometer, all seems OK exept for the rich running at top end of the revs

edit
got 37250 on the clock and was serviced when I bought it in march (33635)

How rich is it running, did they give you a printout that you can post up?

You'll have to host it somewhere and then link it here or take a screenshot and link it here. We're interested in seeing the A/F ratio vs RPM, but it's always interesting to see the power & torque curves too.

No air/fuel ratio data?

Does the bike still have the secondary throttle butterflies in situ ? I removed them from mine and it takes away the restriction in 5th & 6th gear. Just wondering what gear they used for the dyno run ? The secondary butterflies starting to close would give the effect of running rich as the engine is unable to 'breathe' correctly as the secondary's are starting to close, thus cutting off airflow. Just a thought.

as far as I'm aware they are still fitted. what benefits do u get for removing them, how easy is it and does it need re adjusting afterwards?

Without an A/F ratio chart we can't see how rich it is to see if it's a problem. You'd usually want it to lean out a bit towards the top, but not so much that it will cause trouble. I was thinking possible air flow issues from having a restrictive air filter or such, but 2112's secondary throttle body valves seems a better explanation. They are there to restrict the air flow in certain conditions, most notably in 5th and 6th gear to restrict top speed. Removing them wouldn't require any other adjustments.

One thing I'm wondering is why they zeroed your ECU and how it then looked fine on a dyno except at high speed in the top 2 gears. Usually the Vee has a very lean spot around 3500 rpm, did they not see that?

the reason I took it to them in the first place was because of the slapping at low speeds. as I have only had it since march I didn't know if it had been played with/ adjusted hence he zero'd it. I'll speak to him tomorrow and see if he can give me the a/f ratios

If you're handy with spanners you can pop the tank off, open the air box and remove the secondary butterfly valves (top ones.) Use a well fitting screwdriver and make sure the screws don't fall down into the throttle bodies.

I've spent ages trying to work out why the Torque and Power values didn't match at 5250 rpm (because they should do).

Just about to ask why when I saw the torque on your chart is in nM rather than lb/ft.

As Juv' rightly say's it isn't a difficult task, you just need a steady hand ! The upshot is no 5th or 6th gear speed restriction for those high speed 'autobahn' runs and crisper throttle response. For what little effort it takes it's well worth it and requires no adjustments afterwards. It would also explain the drop off in power as I notice the top speed is shown as 149.3mph which must be 6th gear if I remember rightly ? It could be fifth as I had a two tooth larger rear sprocket fitted for a bit more welly out of corners and time has blurred my memory...
